Hello everyone, I am currently facing the problem of installing IKEA Metod baseboards but don’t have the right tools like a drill or screwdriver at hand. Is there a way to securely and properly fix these baseboards completely without tools, using only hands and maybe some simple aids? Ideally, I’m looking for instructions or tips on how to manage without screws and a drill, without the baseboards wobbling or coming loose. Above all, I want to avoid the installation becoming a hassle due to the lack of tools.

Basically, IKEA Metod toe kicks are designed to be attached using clips, which usually require screws and drilling. If you don’t have any tools available, you can try securing the toe kicks with strong double-sided tape on the floor and the side panels. Make sure the surfaces are clean, dry, and free of grease so the tape adheres properly. Alternatively, special construction adhesive or hook-and-loop fasteners can be used, which may hold permanently depending on the surface. However, these do not replace mechanical fastening and should be considered a temporary solution. Achieving a permanently secure installation without tools is difficult, as the toe kicks can easily shift without proper fastening.

You can use double-sided mounting tape or hook-and-loop tape, as already described. Clean the strips thoroughly beforehand. However, without screws, it will never be as secure as with clips.

Exactly, and if it’s just for a temporary setup, an adhesive solution like that works quite well. If you’re feeling creative: small wooden blocks or felt pads can serve as spacers to prevent the baseboard from shifting with the first gust of wind 😄. The important thing is that the surfaces are really clean; otherwise, it can come loose quickly. Good luck with your project!

As an additional note: If you don’t have a drill or screwdriver available but possibly have a hammer or heavy object, you can use pre-made skirting board clips that can be installed by gently tapping them in. These metal clips hold the skirting board firmly and do not require screws. If you also lack the necessary tools for this, your only option is adhesive installation using strong double-sided tape or construction adhesive. The latter provides a permanent bond but is more difficult to remove afterward and may damage the underlying surface.

Hello Schahin, I can understand your situation well. You want to install something quickly but don’t have the right tools on hand. My recommendation: reconsider whether it’s worth making a quick trip to the hardware store or asking someone for a tool, even if it’s just a cheap cordless screwdriver or a regular screwdriver. If that’s not an option, use high-quality double-sided mounting tape designed for heavy loads or construction adhesive. With the latter, pay attention to the curing time and press the baseboards firmly with heavy objects for several hours to ensure a strong bond.

Alternatively – and I know we’re talking ‘without tools’ here – sometimes it helps to temporarily fix the baseboards with strong clamps, if you have any.

If you might want to remove the baseboards later, it’s better to avoid construction adhesive, as it can significantly damage the surface.
