Many of the instructions rely on various specialized tools or helpers, which I do not have. Are there any tips or special tricks to make the assembly as efficient and low-tool as possible? Thanks!

The cordless drill covers most tasks, especially with the right Phillips bit. It is important to first screw all screws in loosely, then tighten them afterwards. Avoid overtightening the screws to reduce the risk of damage.
