Hello everyone,

I am currently assembling my IKEA Metod kitchen but facing a challenge with the drawer slides. Specifically, I would like to know: How do I install IKEA Metod drawer slides without damaging the slides themselves, the drawer sides, or the cabinet sides?

I am particularly interested in which tools are best to use, what to pay attention to when aligning and securing the slides, and if there are common mistakes to avoid. Since the runners are made of metal and the drawer sides are often made of relatively thin wood, I’m somewhat concerned about bending or damaging them when screwing or fitting.

I would really appreciate detailed tips, step-by-step instructions, or any experiences you have with installing these specific drawer slides. Thank you in advance!

Hello tan_el,

I am very familiar with this issue. The installation of the IKEA Metod drawer slides is generally well designed, but the delicate parts and thin wooden panels can be easily damaged if you’re not careful. I’d like to explain in more detail how to carry out the process as gently and safely as possible.

- I recommend using a cordless drill with torque control. This way, you avoid overtightening the screws and damaging the wood.
- Before you start assembly, carefully check all parts and compare them with the instructions. The metal slides often have small locking tabs and should not be forced into place.
- For alignment, a small machinist’s ruler or angle guide is useful to mount the slide cleanly parallel to the drawer side or cabinet.
- Always screw the metal slide in loosely at first, then insert the drawer temporarily and check if it runs smoothly. Only tighten the screws fully when everything fits perfectly.
- Avoid “cross tightening” or screwing in too quickly, as this can cause the thin boards to tear out.
- I strongly recommend using the correct IKEA set, since these slides are precisely matched to the Metod series’ hole patterns.

Have you already started assembling, or at which points exactly are you having difficulties? That would help me give you more targeted advice.

That sums it up very well!

I would like to add that when using the screws, it is really important to drive them in carefully. Especially with the thin side panels of the Metod drawers, it’s easy to drill too deep or overtighten the screws, which can weaken or even split the wood.

It’s best to work with a pointed screwdriver bit and insert the screws gradually at a low torque.

Also, it helps to place the screws into the pilot holes before fully driving them in to avoid splitting the wood. If you’re unsure, you can carefully make small pilot holes with a thin drill bit.

I also find it important to check each slide individually for a firm hold before installation and then slide them into the drawers without applying excessive pressure—this helps prevent damage.

In summary, the installation of the IKEA Metod drawer slides can be precisely carried out in the following steps to avoid damage:

- Preparation: Use tools with torque limitation and check all parts for proper fit.
- Positioning: The rail guides must be aligned exactly parallel to the drawer and cabinet interior. A spirit level or square can assist with this.
- Screwing: Then, tighten the screws lightly with low torque to prevent stress.
- Test fitting: Check the drawer’s movement by fitting it temporarily before securing the screws finally.
- Fastening: After the final adjustment, carefully and gradually tighten all screws.

If cracks or damage occur, it may be worthwhile to use pre-drilled holes or reinforce the material with special wood adhesives.

A question for tan_el: What type of screwdriver or cordless drill do you use? That can make a difference.

I haven’t really started yet because I was hoping to get some detailed advice first. The most important issue for me is the precise alignment and how to avoid damaging the thin drawer sides.

I’m using a cordless drill with adjustable torque, which I originally bought for furniture assembly. Still, I’m a bit concerned that the torque settings might not be fine enough, and I might accidentally overtighten the screws.

Thanks for the tips so far, especially the suggestion to test fit the drawer first—I hadn’t thought about that before.

I would like to add a few practical tips that helped me a lot when installing the Metod drawer slides:

- When aligning according to the instructions, use the pre-drilled holes on the drawer sides and initially attach the metal slide loosely with just one screw. This way, you can test the drawer’s movement and still have room for adjustments.

- The most common cause of damage is warping the drawer sides by forcing the slides into place. Especially if the holes are not perfectly aligned, too much force is often applied. It’s better to double-check measurements and reposition than to push hard.

- If you notice that screws are not catching properly, make sure your screwdriver bit fits the screw heads exactly. A bit that’s too large or worn can damage the screw slot and cause slipping.

- Small pilot holes can slightly reduce the risk of wood splitting in tricky spots. But don’t use drill bits that are too large, as this will reduce the holding strength.

Do you have specific drawer widths or combinations (e.g., inner drawers or integrated soft-close elements) that you are installing? Installation can vary in those cases.
