Hello everyone,

I have an issue with the hinges on my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets: they have started squeaking when I open or close the doors. Since I prefer not to replace the hinges, I’m looking for ways to eliminate or at least significantly reduce the squeaking without completely changing the hinges.

Has anyone had experience maintaining or repairing these Metod hinges? Are there specific lubricants or techniques that can stop the squeaking? I assume it’s related to lubrication or the mechanics, but I definitely don’t want to take any risks or break parts. Any practical advice for repair without replacement would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

try lubricating the hinge with silicone spray. Just spray it on the joint, and it usually stops squeaking. Avoid using oil or WD-40, as they attract dust.

If possible, remove the door and open the hinge to access the bearing points.

Hey,

I totally understand the squeaking from Metod hinges, it’s really annoying! 😅 Silicone spray is the secret tip – the cabinet suddenly squeaks like a gentle whisper. Just spray it on the joint and then open and close the doors a few times so it spreads evenly.

Sometimes, gritty graphite powder also helps – yes, it’s old-fashioned, but it works great if you can reach inside properly. Feel free to try whichever you prefer. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip, but I have some concerns about whether silicone spray might damage or cause sticking of the plastic parts in the hinge. Has anyone had experience with this? How long does such a treatment usually last, or would I need to reapply it frequently?

Also, I noticed that the squeaking occurs not only when opening but also when closing. Is this caused by the same joint, or are there other areas I should pay attention to?

In general, it’s important to do this carefully without damaging the mechanism.

Hello,

here is a more detailed guide on how to often fix the problematic squeaking of IKEA Metod hinges without having to replace them:

- First, carefully remove the door. To do this, you need to release the large plastic clips on the hinges.
- Use a cotton swab to gently clean all visible metal joints on the hinge to remove dust and dirt.
- Then apply a silicone spray or a special plastic lubricant to the hinge – silicone is safe for both plastic parts and metal.
- Re-hang the door and open and close it several times to allow the lubricant to spread evenly.
- If the squeaking persists, you can also try applying a small amount of grease to the hinge screws, but be careful not to get it on other surfaces.

Common mistakes include using too much oil on the plastic parts or applying harsher lubricants like WD-40, which can damage plastic and cause long-term hinge problems.

Usually, this treatment lasts for several months, and with frequent use, it can be repeated every few months. It is worth performing this maintenance preventively to avoid squeaking from developing in the first place.

If you are unsure about removing or re-installing the door, feel free to ask!

Exactly! An important tip, otherwise it's hardly possible to reach the lubrication points.
