Hello everyone, I have noticed that some screws in my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets, especially on the doors and connection points, have become loose over time. I would like to fix this issue permanently, preferably without having to take the furniture apart. Does anyone have experience with the best way to repair loose screws in Metod furniture? Are there any specific techniques or materials that have proven effective? It is important to me that the screws hold firmly in the long term and that the furniture remains stable. Thanks in advance for your advice!

It could be due to excessive load, material fatigue, or simply poor assembly. Without identifying the exact cause, any repair will only address the symptom rather than the problem.
Metod furniture often uses particleboard, which over time may not hold the threads well. One option is to use larger dowels or special repair inserts to restore the threads in the wood. Simply tightening the screws again might only lead to the same issue recurring.
I’m also curious whether you have checked if the screws themselves are intact, or if hinges and fittings might be contributing to the problem.

Particleboard is often used in Metod furniture, which over time does not hold screws securely. That is correct. My recommendation for repairing loose screws in Ikea Metod furniture is as follows:
- Remove the screws completely.
- Check if the material in the screw hole is damaged or frayed.
- For damaged holes, inserting wooden shims or wooden dowels (e.g., 6mm (1/4 inch) round dowels) that can be glued in is suitable to securely fix the screw afterward.
- Alternatively, special threaded inserts (brass bushings) designed for furniture repair can be used.
- After insertion, apply new glue (wood glue) and allow it to dry thoroughly before reinserting the screw.
This restores a stable connection that lasts longer than simply refastening without preparation.

I want to solve the problem permanently without having to disassemble the furniture, if possible. It is definitely possible to repair screws on Metod furniture without major disassembly, although the effort varies depending on the type of problem. If the screws are only slightly loose and the surrounding wood is still firm, you can proceed as follows:
- Unscrew the screws to avoid causing damage.
- Clean the holes, removing any remaining dust if necessary.
- Insert a small wood shaving (e.g., from a toothpick or a small piece of wood) into the hole to compact the material inside.
- Screw the screws back in, ideally using new or slightly thicker ones.
If the threads are completely stripped, these methods are not sufficient. In that case, a minor repair with dowels or threaded inserts may be necessary.
Additionally, it is important to check the hinges and fittings themselves. Sometimes they can be readjusted or need to be replaced because they are causing the looseness.
If the screws are loose but the holes are still in good condition, simply apply wood glue into the hole and tighten the screw. This usually holds better than before.
If that doesn’t help, insert a small wooden filler or cork into the screw hole, then reinsert the screw. This quickly and easily stabilizes the thread.
