Hello everyone,

I am currently working on aligning the doors of my new BILLY shelving unit and want to make sure the doors fit perfectly and can be adjusted smoothly. Unfortunately, I have noticed that the doors are hanging slightly crooked, which not only looks off but also affects how well they open and close.

My question is: How can I ensure that BILLY doors are properly aligned? Are there any special tips or tools I should use? I am aware of the standard adjustment screws on the hinges, but I’m having trouble getting it right without the doors sticking or not sitting flush.

I would really appreciate detailed advice or personal experiences on the best way to approach this, including the most effective sequence for making adjustments.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Eldupin, it’s great that you’re tackling this yourself! 🙂

The most important tip for BILLY doors is to take your time and adjust each door individually. At the top hinge, you’ll find two adjustment screws—one for horizontal alignment and the other for vertical adjustment.

Start by bringing the door as straight as possible toward the furniture unit (horizontally), as this helps a lot. If you notice the door sticking at the top or bottom, you can slightly loosen or tighten the vertical screw until it fits properly.

Important: Adjust the door only once the furniture piece is fully assembled and in its final position. If you’re lucky to have a small spirit level or protractor, you can also use those to help with the alignment.

I did this myself, and it was a really satisfying experience! 😉 Good luck, you can do it!

Hello Eldupin,

I’m happy to help with a step-by-step guide to make adjusting your BILLY doors easier:

1. Assemble the furniture firmly: Make sure the bookshelf stands straight and stable. Use a spirit level to align the cabinet precisely.

2. Check the hinges: The BILLY doors have two adjustment screws per hinge. One adjusts the door horizontally (side to side), the other adjusts the vertical position.

3. Follow the order: First, roughly adjust all doors horizontally. Open the doors and slowly turn the horizontal adjustment screw until the doors sit flush against the frame.

4. Fine-tune vertically: Next, adjust the vertical screw to prevent the doors from sticking at the top or bottom. Also check that the doors are parallel to the cabinet between the hinges.

5. Check the gaps: Make sure the doors stand evenly in relation to the cabinet, so that the gaps between the doors and the frame are as uniform as possible.

6. Test the movement: Open and close the doors several times to ensure nothing catches and the doors operate smoothly.

Useful tools include a screwdriver, a small spirit level, and possibly a thin feeler gauge (or a folded piece of paper) to check the gaps.

Common issue: If the cabinet isn’t properly positioned, it will be difficult to align any door correctly. So be sure to check the basic structure of the unit first.

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Great tip! I did it the same way once and ended up with doors that fit almost like they were custom-made 🙂

Here’s a little tip from me: once the doors are properly aligned, you can apply a bit of lubricating grease on the hinges (a few drops of sewing machine oil or something similar). This keeps the adjustment screws moving smoothly and prevents any squeaking when opening and closing.

Don’t hesitate to readjust the screws several times – sometimes it takes a bit of patience, but the feeling when everything fits so perfectly is really satisfying!

Enjoy!
