Hello everyone,

I have several pieces of furniture in my apartment from Malm (IKEA) with white matte lacquered surfaces. Now I am facing the challenge of cleaning these surfaces without leaving any sanding marks, scratches, or dull spots.

Specifically, I am looking for advice on how to clean Malm surfaces, especially these sensitive matte lacquers, without accidentally causing sanding marks. I want to avoid small scratches from the wrong cleaning products or tools that later become noticeable to the naked eye.

Perhaps you have tips on the right cleaning agents, aids like cloths or sponges, as well as the best methods or cleaning frequency.

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

I have a question: What exactly do you mean by sanding marks? Are these microscopic scratches that are only visible under certain lighting conditions, or are they actual noticeable indentations you can feel?

Because it is quite possible that microfiber cloths, if used improperly, can cause small scratches when sand grains or other hard particles are trapped in the fabric. That’s why it’s important to change cleaning cloths regularly and avoid wiping with dirty cloths.

Another challenge is the potential alteration of the surface texture due to solvents in the cleaners. I wonder if the “gloss” you mention might actually be a form of etching on the matte surface?

Also, many people say you should never clean in circular motions to avoid sanding marks, but I have found that on matte surfaces, a consistent wiping direction is actually better to prevent uneven light reflections.

I would suggest using a specialized cleaner designed for matte finishes and ensuring regular cleaning with clean, fresh microfiber cloths.

Exactly, these are not scratches you can feel, but rather fine matte or glossy spots that become especially visible in daylight and from specific angles. It looks as if the surface has become slightly uneven, and these spots reflect or shimmer differently than the surrounding areas.

At first, I thought they were dust or grease stains, but even after cleaning, I can’t always remove them completely. My assumption is that the surface was slightly roughened by too much pressure or using the wrong cloth.

Therefore, I am interested in how to clean carefully on a regular basis to avoid this effect.

Perhaps someone else has experience with the so-called matte paint sealants used by Malm?

The issue with Malm furniture that has a matte finish lies in the surface itself, which, unlike glossy finishes, does not have a smooth sealed layer but rather a fine, slightly textured matting. This texture gives the furniture its distinctive look but also makes it sensitive to mechanical stress and chemical exposure.

To clean the surface optimally without causing abrasion marks, I recommend the following approach:

1. Use only fine microfiber cloths without a firm backing, avoiding rough cloths or sponges.

2. Before cleaning, gently dust the furniture to remove abrasive particles. Dust and sand grains are the main causes of micro-scratches.

3. For the actual cleaning, use a mild, pH-neutral solution, such as a special furniture cleaner suitable for matte finishes, or very carefully diluted dish soap.

4. Avoid pressing hard. Work with light pressure in one direction, avoiding circular motions to prevent uneven matting.

5. After cleaning, always wipe again with a damp, clean cloth to remove any residues.

6. When drying, do not rub; instead, lay the cloth on the surface or gently dab it dry.

7. If abrasion marks or dull spots still appear: some professional furniture restorers recommend using very fine polishing pastes specifically for matte surfaces on small areas, but this is only advisable for professionals or experienced DIYers.

Finally, a note: the lifespan and appearance of a matte finish depend heavily on proper care. Regular gentle cleaning and avoiding aggressive products are essential.

If you like, I can also provide sources for appropriate cleaning solutions.

That exactly confirms what I suspected, thank you!

So I will switch to a soft microfiber cloth, slightly dampen it, and wipe in one direction with as little pressure as possible.

Home remedies like a splash of white vinegar in the water are not ideal for painted surfaces

I wasn't aware of that, thanks also for the warning.

I will definitely look into some of the recommended special cleaners and report back on how it goes. Thanks again for your thorough and helpful advice! 🙂
