Lili70Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a few days: What is the best way to clean IKEA Platsa furniture when there are stubborn stains?
Specifically, I’m referring to the white fronts and carcasses, which seem to be sensitive to standard cleaners or where stains don’t come off easily with just soap and water.
I’ve already tried using a mild all-purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth, but some stains, such as coffee cup rings or small paint splatters, won’t come off.
Maybe someone has experience with special cleaning methods that won’t damage the material? For example, is vinegar or alcohol suitable, or should other products be used?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello Lili70, I completely understand how frustrating this can be—especially when you want your furniture to look fresh for a long time. I once had a stubborn stain on my PLATSA that nearly drove me crazy.
What helped me was first trying a mild dish soap solution, and then carefully using a special eraser sponge (yes, those melamine sponges). It’s important not to scrub too hard, as that can dull the surface.
Exactly for stains like those, the key for me was using a damp sponge with very gentle pressure, then drying everything thoroughly. If you want, I can also tell you which cleaners I definitely avoided because they were too harsh.

For cleaning IKEA PLATSA furniture—especially white, painted surfaces—I recommend the following procedure:
- Avoid harsh cleaners such as vinegar, alcohol, or solvents, as they can damage and dull the surface.
- Start with a mild dish soap in lukewarm water, and clean the affected area using a soft cloth.
- For stubborn stains, a melamine sponge can be used, but only with very light pressure; test the sponge first on an inconspicuous spot.
- Always wipe down with clean water afterward to remove any residue.
- Finally, thoroughly dry the surface with a lint-free cloth.
This method is proven and minimizes the risk of surface damage.

Hello Lili70,
I assume the PLATSA fronts are laminated particleboard or have a foil coating, correct? Cleaning these materials can be a bit more delicate.
For stubborn stains, I recommend a multi-step process:
- 1. Preparation: Remove dust and loose dirt to avoid spreading it further.
- 2. Pre-cleaning with a neutral, pH-balanced all-purpose cleaner or dish soap.
- 3. Test on an inconspicuous area: Always try stronger cleaners here first before use.
- 4. Stain treatment:
- For organic stains (coffee, grease), mild degreasing cleaners work well.
- For paint splatters, gentle solvents like isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) can be used, but apply only locally and sparingly, do not scrub—dab instead.
- 5. Aftercare: Wipe with clean water and dry.
Important: Avoid abrasive cleaners, as they can scratch the surface.
Could you please specify what kind of stains they are? That would help me give you more targeted advice.

These melamine sponges are almost like little mop ghosts 🧽👻 that work great on stains – but you really have to use them very gently, otherwise the surface might end up looking like it was hit by a tornado.
And to keep your PLATSA looking nice, Lili70: keep the sponge moist when using it, not dry. A dry sponge is too abrasive.
What also helps: always quickly polish afterwards with a microfiber cloth to prevent water marks.
