Hello everyone,

I want to keep my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets clean without using chemical cleaners, as I prefer to avoid harsh cleaning agents. The surface is melamine-coated, and I’m concerned that some home remedies might damage the coating or may not be effective enough, especially on grease stains and everyday dirt.

So my specific question is: What reliable and gentle methods or home remedies can you recommend for cleaning IKEA Metod cabinets without resorting to strong chemical cleaners?

What are your experiences with vinegar, baking soda, lemon, or other natural substances regarding effectiveness, material compatibility, and ease of use?

I look forward to constructive tips and perhaps advice on mistakes to avoid. Thanks in advance!

Hello non51,

I simply use warm water with a little dish soap. That’s always enough for me to clean the Metod cabinet fronts. It’s important to wipe them down well afterwards with clean water to avoid any residue. I would avoid vinegar, as it can damage the surfaces.

For melamine or plastic-coated surfaces like IKEA Metod, I recommend cleaning with a mild soapy solution or a neutral all-purpose cleaner based on natural surfactants. Household remedies such as vinegar essence or citric acid should be avoided, as the acids can gradually damage or dull the coating.

For stubborn grease stains, you can use baking powder or baking soda mixed with water to form a paste, applying it gently and then wiping off with a soft cloth. It is important to avoid abrasive sponges or brushes that can scratch the surface.

To prevent streaking, use a microfiber cloth and polish the surface with a dry cloth after cleaning. This combination helps keep the furniture in good condition and clean for a long time.

Exactly, vinegar is a popular home remedy, but especially on melamine-coated furniture, it should be used cautiously or avoided altogether if in doubt.

A simple and gentle method I have been using for years:

- First, clean with a damp cloth and a drop of clear, mild dish soap mixed with water.
- For stubborn stains, make a paste of baking soda and water, apply gently, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe off.
- Afterwards, wipe again with a damp cloth and polish dry with a microfiber cloth.

This protects the surface while effectively removing grease and dust.

If you are unsure, always test a cleaner first on an inconspicuous area to avoid damage. Use only a small amount of liquid to prevent moisture from seeping into edges or joints.
