Hello everyone,

I am specifically looking for recommendations and proven methods to clean heavily soiled Ikea Besta furniture. In particular, I need advice for the Besta fronts with both high-gloss and matte painted surfaces, which, due to everyday use, unfortunately show stains, greasy residues, and in some cases light scratches or areas that have become dull.

The furniture has been in use for several years and clearly requires more than just a regular wipe with a damp cloth. I want to treat the surfaces gently to avoid damaging the paint or plastic coating.

Who can provide tips on:
- Cleaning agents that are effective but do not harm the surfaces
- How to deal with stubborn, greasy stains
- How to handle dull areas or light scratches
- Useful home remedies or special products suitable for this purpose

I look forward to your practical advice and suggestions on what should definitely be avoided to restore the furniture optimally.

Hello novin,

I have extensive experience with Ikea Besta furniture and would like to provide you with a structured overview for cleaning:

- Preparation: Remove dust with a soft, dry cloth.
- Cleaning agents: Use mild dish soap with warm water. Strong, aggressive cleaners such as acetone or alcohol-based products often damage the finish and should be avoided.
- Stain treatment: For greasy residues, a mixture of water and a small amount of vinegar essence in low concentration works well. Let it sit for a while, then gently wipe off.
- Dried or stubborn stains: Allow some time with a damp cloth for soaking. If needed, linseed oil can help to slightly conceal minor scratches on high-gloss surfaces.
- Dulling of the surface: Do not use abrasive scrubbing agents. Instead, rely on microfiber cloths and polish with a dry, soft cloth after cleaning.

Summary: Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive sponges; instead, work with mild solutions, patience, and soft cloths.

If you want to know which specific product is recommended, I can suggest some brands. It is important to always test clean an inconspicuous area first.

That’s a good tip, but you should apply the linseed oil very sparingly and only in targeted areas to avoid leaving greasy spots.

I have Ikea Besta furniture with high-gloss finishes myself, which can quickly look dirty when touched with oily fingers or kitchen grease. In those cases, I use a warm, damp microfiber cloth with a bit of mild soap – it cleans thoroughly but gently. For especially stubborn stains, I carefully try a drop of rubbing alcohol, but only very diluted and only on lacquered surfaces, never on wood veneer.

Important: Wipe immediately afterward with clean water and polish with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.

If you have a lot of grease, regular cleaning is recommended to avoid buildup layers that become harder to remove later.

Unfortunately, small scratches can usually only be softened with special polishing products from furniture care manufacturers. Most “home remedies” have limited effect in this regard.

Precise cleaning requires correctly identifying the material used. Ikea Besta furniture is typically made from coated particleboard with either laminated or painted surfaces. Therefore, please note the following:

- Do not use aggressive solvents or harsh abrasive cleaners.
- For high-gloss fronts, only use pH-neutral cleaning agents.
- For matte surfaces, a damp microfiber cloth and a mild cleaner from the "surface care for coated furniture" product range are suitable.

Regarding greasy stains:
- Use rubbing alcohol carefully and only spot-clean,
- Alternatively: water with a few drops of dishwashing detergent.

Simple polishing with a dry, soft cloth restores shine and does not remove micro-scratches but reduces their visibility.

Avoid using excessive water, as standing moisture can cause the edges to swell. Also, always check the manufacturer’s instructions on the Ikea website or the care manual, if available, before cleaning.

This will ensure a gentle and effective cleaning process.
