Hello everyone, I recently purchased several IKEA Platsa units with wood surfaces and am now wondering how to best care for and protect them. Specifically, I’m interested in tips for cleaning, preventing scratches or watermarks, and recommendations on which care products are advisable or should be avoided. Since these are relatively delicate wood surfaces, I want to make sure I don’t do anything wrong and keep the furniture looking good for as long as possible. Does anyone have experience or advice specifically regarding Platsa? I look forward to practical and helpful responses.

In brief:
- Use a damp cloth that is only slightly moist
- Do not use chemicals containing solvents
- Use coasters
- Use felt pads to protect against scratches
That’s all you need for Ikea Platsa wood surfaces.

gently and dry care keeps the wood happy

Thank you for the friendly advice, Elodie! The “gently and dry” method sounds very practical.

I’m also curious: What are your thoughts on regular maintenance using furniture care products specifically designed for wood? Some products claim to offer extra protection against UV light or stains; are these really beneficial for Platsa wood surfaces, or could they be more of a risk? And if they are risky—are there natural alternatives?

I would like to add that IKEA Platsa furniture features melamine-coated wood surfaces, which should not be treated with oil- or wax-based care products. These coatings are factory-sealed to provide some resistance to moisture and abrasion. Furniture care products containing additives such as silicones or waxes can feel sticky on these surfaces and attract dust.

Natural alternatives, like pure olive oil, are generally not suitable for these surfaces because they could damage the sealant. Therefore, it is best to stick to gentle cleaning and occasional protection with coasters and careful handling.

I can only agree with what @taotis53 said. For Platsa, such care products are rather unnecessary or even counterproductive. The piece already has that beautiful, protective finish. Too much maintenance can actually cause problems.

Of course, you can occasionally use a dry, soft cloth that allows the wood to ‘breathe.’ But avoid too much lotion or oil – otherwise, it quickly becomes sticky and attracts dirt.

With a little care and common sense, the furniture will stay looking nice for years. 🙂

I agree with that. My experience with similarly veneered or melamine-coated furniture is that the best care is simply cleaning with a slightly damp, soft cloth, followed by drying.

In the long term: avoid UV exposure, extreme heat, or constant moisture on the surfaces. These factors often cause the biggest problems. For scratches: primarily use mechanical protection such as pads and spacers.

Surface care products are more likely to damage the coating. Therefore, the approach is clear: minimal cleaning with caution.

Thank you all very much. In summary, the most important points seem to be:

- Regular cleaning with a damp, not wet, cloth
- Immediate drying if water or other liquids spill
- Protection from heat using coasters
- Avoid using oil- or wax-based care products
- Protection against mechanical scratches using felt pads

If anyone has tips for cleaning small stains or specific types of dirt, I would really appreciate it. Otherwise – very helpful information, thank you!
