Hello everyone, I am currently planning to build a kitchen island using IKEA Metod units and am looking for tips on how to make this island especially practical as a work surface. Specifically, I am interested in the best way to arrange the units, which material is suitable for the countertop, and how to integrate storage efficiently without making the island look too bulky. I have already heard a bit about the standard assembly of Metod, but I am mainly looking for ways to optimize the work surface so that it remains functional while also providing an appealing overall look. Do you have experience with special combinations or useful extensions that IKEA does not directly offer? Thanks in advance for all your suggestions!
I am adding some clear recommendations for the planning:
- Module selection: For storage, I recommend three drawer cabinets (60 cm wide (24 inches)) for cutlery, cooking utensils, and pots. The cabinet for the sink should be deep enough to accommodate the water connection (at least 60 cm wide (24 inches)).
- Worktop: Solid wood (oak or beech) is durable, can be sanded down again, and is hygienic when oiled.
- Fixing: Since the island is freestanding, make sure to create sturdy connections between the modules. Screws and brackets will strengthen the construction.
- Edging: For worktops without upstand, ensure that water drains well and the edges are protected.
It is also advisable to plan connection points for water and electricity early with a plumber and electrician to avoid costly modifications later.

Just to be sure: The island will be installed on a stable, level surface, right? If there are any uneven spots, be sure to use leveling feet in advance.
For the sink area, I also recommend using a waterproof sealing mat under the countertop, especially if it is solid wood.
If seating is desired, the area should be at least 40 cm deep (16 inches) to allow comfortable sitting.
One more tip: Keep the IKEA Metod assembly parts well during installation so you can make adjustments later if needed.
