Hello everyone, I am planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island myself and integrate various appliances—such as a dishwasher, an oven, and possibly a cooktop. I am particularly interested in how to best configure the modules, which dimensions I need to consider, especially for the planned appliances, and how to organize the electrical wiring and water connections ideally. Tips on stability and fastening of the island would also be very helpful, especially since the island is often freestanding. Does anyone have experience with this project or can describe in detail how they built their kitchen island using Metod cabinets with integrated appliances? I look forward to your detailed advice and suggestions!

That sounds like a really cool project! 😃 I would recommend first checking the basic dimensions of the appliances to make sure everything fits well and nothing gets stuck. Especially with freestanding islands, stability is very important – so be sure to securely fix the carcass with extra hinges or brackets!

When connecting the appliances, I would honestly advise using a professional, since plumbing and electrical work on the island can be tricky.

Also important: think carefully about how the countertop will be attached. IKEA countertops are often just laid on top; for an island project, I’d suggest screwing or gluing it down as well so nothing wobbles.

If you like, I can also share some tips on achieving flush fittings with the panels – sometimes the devil is in the details 😉

Exactly. Electrical and water connections for the island should always be done by a professional.

- Important: Fit the appliances before installing the cabinet fronts.
- Stick to the standard dimensions of the Metod modules.
- Don’t forget a stable base panel.

Hello Elpin,

here is a structural approach to efficiently and safely plan your Metod kitchen island with integrated appliances:

- Dimension planning: Appliances like ovens and dishwashers have standardized dimensions (e.g., 60 cm (24 inches) width). Align the cabinet module widths accordingly (60, 80, 40 cm (24, 31.5, 16 inches) are common for Metod).

- Modularity: Especially important for the kitchen island is that the modules fit precisely. You should adjust the height (approx. 80 cm (31.5 inches) without countertop) and depth (standard 60 cm (24 inches), often 63 cm (25 inches) for islands) accurately.

- Assembly: Connect the base cabinets with IKEA’s sturdy connecting fittings. For additional stability, it is recommended to attach corner braces.

- Fronts and countertop: Install the fronts only after all appliances are installed and adjusted. You can additionally bond the island countertop with silicone and secure it underneath with screws.

- Appliance integration: When routing cables and water connections, ensure the connections remain easily accessible before installing the fronts. Plan cable channels and water lines so that they are not pinched or compressed.

- Recommendation: Obtain the technical data sheets for the appliances before purchase so you can optimally coordinate the internal cabinet dimensions.

If you like, I can provide a list of common errors and tips to avoid them.

I think it’s great that you’re taking on your own kitchen project! An island like that can be really exciting, but I also know how quickly the many details can become overwhelming. My advice is to really take your time with the planning, make a list of what you want and where, and don’t hesitate to involve professionals for the technical parts if needed.

What helped me was constantly checking during assembly to ensure everything was properly aligned, safe, and stable – and not rushing ahead if something was still loose or inaccurate. Your kitchen island should give you pleasure for a long time.
