Hello everyone, I have noticed that the drawer slides on my Ikea Besta cabinets have become increasingly stiff and sometimes squeak. My question is: What is the best way to lubricate Ikea Besta drawer slides without damaging the slides or impairing their function? Are there any specific lubricants you would recommend, or should I avoid certain substances, such as oils that attract dirt? Is there anything I should do before lubricating, for example cleaning or preparing the slides in a certain way? I definitely don’t want to compromise the smooth movement or stability of the drawers by lubricating them incorrectly. Thank you very much for your experience and helpful tips!
The drawer slides of the Ikea Besta units are usually made of metal, often with plastic rollers. The best option for clean, slip-free lubrication is a sprayable silicone spray. Before applying, you should definitely clean the slides, for example with some rubbing alcohol, to remove old dirt and residues. I would not recommend using oils, as they attract dust and become sticky quickly.

- First, fully extend the drawer and pull it out completely to access the drawer slides freely.
- Thoroughly clean the metal and plastic parts from dirt and old lubricants using suitable cleaning agents such as isopropanol or denatured alcohol.
- Allow to dry to avoid any residual moisture.
- Then apply a high-quality, water-free silicone spray or Teflon spray. These lubricate well and do not attract dust.
- Spray sparingly on the rollers and rails, moving the drawer back and forth several times to evenly distribute the lubricant.
- Avoid mineral oil-based oils, as they can cause contamination and impair the mechanism.
This will extend the lifespan of the drawer slides and ensure long-lasting smooth operation.

Are there any specific lubricants that are recommended, or should I avoid certain ones, like oils that attract dirt? I used to wonder about that a lot as well. At first, I was a bit unsure because the drawers were already squeaking in places and sometimes felt stiff. What really helped me was patiently cleaning everything thoroughly before even thinking about applying any lubricant. The tip about silicone spray gave me confidence since I was afraid of damaging the mechanism.
Sometimes I also slightly loosened the mounting screws and readjusted the drawer; combined with the right lubricant, that really improved the function. It’s worth taking your time—I know it’s frustrating when you’re looking for a quick answer. Hopefully, you’ll get your Besta drawers working well again!

Then use a high-quality, water-free silicone spray or Teflon spray. Exactly! Silicone spray is amazing for these tracks! I did the same with my Besta, and now the drawers slide almost by themselves. It’s really satisfying when everything runs smoothly again 🙂!
One small tip: Make sure the spray doesn’t get on the front or other visible parts, or you might end up with stains! I used masking tape for that.
Do it, it’s worth it!
