AnnamuHello everyone, I’m currently facing the challenge of assembling Ikea Hemnes furniture completely on my own, especially a Hemnes wardrobe and a few dressers. Since these pieces are somewhat bulky and can be quite complex to put together, I’m wondering what the best approach is to assemble them efficiently, safely, and with the cleanest possible result when working alone. Are there any specific techniques, tools, or tips that have proven particularly useful? I’m also interested in how to best plan the process—whether to combine certain steps or do them one after another—to ensure the furniture is built solidly and professionally. I look forward to your advice!
Hey Annamu, this is really a great topic! 😊 I think the most important advice is patience and good preparation! It’s best to find a quiet time in the morning when you’re not stressed. Very important: first carefully read the instructions and sort all the parts by type and screws. 🙂 A little trick I use: follow only one step in the instructions at a time and don’t stop halfway—complete it fully before moving on. That way, you don’t lose focus! Also very important: have your tools ready – Phillips screwdriver, Allen keys, and possibly a cordless drill, which really saves a lot of time! Sometimes it also helps to assemble the large base plate or the main frame on the floor first, then lift it up. You’ll rock this!

Hello Annamu, I understand that assembling the Hemnes on your own can be challenging, but with the right approach, it will work out! My advice is to start with the base or the main frame, as this provides stability during further assembly. Make sure not to tighten any screws too much before everything is properly aligned, as this makes adjustments easier. If you’re still unsure, you might want to use small temporary supports made from foam or old towels to prevent scratches during assembly. Additionally, carefully reading the instructions is essential: some construction steps require certain parts to be loosely fixed until other components are installed. For each element, I recommend going back and fully tightening all screws at the end. If you like, I can provide more detailed guidance on specific assembly points.

Very important as well: have your tools ready – Phillips screwdriver, Allen keys, and possibly a cordless drill, that really saves a lot of time!I think this is exactly one of those Ikea myths. Of course, a cordless drill is easier on your hands, but often the fast rotation leads to stripped screws or even splintered wood with Hemnes products. Especially when working alone, you need to be careful. Patience and a gentle touch are more important than pure efficiency.
Also: why always take the easiest route? A bit of a challenge is sometimes necessary, otherwise you quickly lose sight of the craft! 😉
So, my advice: it’s better to work with a well-fitting Phillips screwdriver and careful pressure by hand than to blindly rely on a power tool.
