Hello everyone, I am currently working on assembling Malm dressers and frequently encounter the problem of screw heads getting damaged quickly when tightening them. This not only makes later adjustments more difficult but can also negatively affect the appearance and, in the worst case, impair functionality. Therefore, my specific question is: What proven methods or tips are there to avoid screw damage during Malm assembly, especially when tightening the screws? I have already tried using different screwdrivers and torque settings, but I am not always able to secure the screws without causing damage. Are there any special tools, techniques, or tricks that have helped you with this issue? Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

Also pay attention to the type of screw head. Some cabinet models use Phillips, while others use Torx. Torx is less prone to damage and provides better grip when screwing. If possible, look for Torx screws and use the appropriate bits.

Hey, I have to say, screw damage is really a nightmare! A little tip from me: place a rubber or leather pad underneath to keep the angle steady and prevent the screwdriver from slipping. This saves a lot of scratches and rounded-off heads. And: always start gently, then screwing goes much smoother ;-)

Exactly, Torx is much more durable during assembly. Additionally, it is recommended to use tools that not only fit well but are also clean. Worn-out bits can cause damage quickly.

Thank you very much for the helpful tips! I find the idea of using wax or soap interesting since I sometimes have a hard time driving in the screws. A specific problem I have is that I often only carry simple Phillips bits that aren’t very sharp anymore. Would you recommend buying special Torx bits/drivers, or is it enough to sharpen or better maintain the tools I already have? Also, is there a certain sequence for tightening screws on Malm furniture that helps prevent damage to the screws?

Personally, I would invest in good quality Torx bits. It’s better to buy a good set once than to keep struggling. This simply provides more confidence while working, and you won’t have to worry about damaging anything.

Absolutely! Always start by inserting all screws loosely, then gradually tighten them step by step. This avoids putting excessive pressure on individual screws and allows the wood to settle properly. It’s a bit like a chess game when assembling furniture! ;-)
