Hello everyone,

I have several Malm furniture pieces from IKEA that have developed small to medium-sized damages from everyday use over the past few months. Specifically, there are scratches on the surface finish, some chipped edges, and a few loose screws or joints. Since I don’t want to simply replace the furniture, I would like to know the best and most durable way to repair these issues.

Which materials and tools are best suited for this? Are there specific repair kits recommended for Malm due to its material (particleboard with a laminated surface)? How can I cleanly repair chipped edges without the result looking messy?

I’m really looking forward to your experiences and tips—preferably with practical step-by-step guides or useful tricks! Thanks in advance.

Hey Habib49, wow, that’s a really detailed question – I love it! 🙂

I once had scratches on my MALM bedside table as well, and I remember using a furniture touch-up marker. It’s super easy: apply the marker, let it dry briefly, and the scratch becomes barely noticeable! For chipped edges, I recommend using wood filler and then sanding it down with fine-grit sandpaper – this will restore a smooth surface.

Of course, it takes a bit of patience, but it’s definitely worth it! Keep us updated on how it goes! :-)

You can repair scratches using furniture polish or special repair wax. For chipped edges: apply wood filler, sand it down, then protect with clear varnish or a foil covering. Simply tighten screws, and if needed, secure them with some wood glue.

Hello Habib49,

I’d be happy to help you with a simple step-by-step guide on how to repair damage to MALM furniture.

1. Preparation: Clean the damaged area thoroughly with a damp cloth.

2. Small scratches: Use a suitable furniture repair marker (choose the right color!), apply it thinly, and let it dry.

3. Chipped edges: Fill the area with wood filler, shaping it as closely as possible to the original contour. Let it dry (follow the manufacturer’s instructions).

4. Sanding: Afterwards, smooth the surface with very fine sandpaper (grit 220-320) to remove any unevenness.

5. Protection: Apply an appropriate sealant such as clear varnish or furniture wax polish to make the surface more resistant.

Make sure to select the right color match, as MALM typically has light foil finishes that are not always easy to repair perfectly. A little tip: For screws, you can use some wood glue or wooden dowels before retightening if the threads have worn out.

If you need more detailed information on any of these steps, just let me know!

Absolutely true, and that sometimes makes things really tricky!

I once tried to fix a chipped corner on my MALM desk using colored wood filler – it actually looked quite good, but under direct light, you could still see the difference. My tip: Sometimes it helps to cover the repaired area with a matching thin decorative laminate or color-coordinated tape. Not always the perfect solution, but definitely sufficient for a few years and looks tidy 🙂

Great tip! I’ve done that myself occasionally when I didn’t have time for the perfect finish :-). The main thing is that the piece of furniture keeps its charm, right?

Oh, and for all the DIY fans out there: I usually use a small hairdryer to speed up the hardening of repair wax – it’s quick and a lot of fun!
