Hello everyone,
I noticed that the drawer slides on one side of my IKEA Malm dresser are no longer working properly. The drawer sticks and doesn’t slide smoothly anymore. My question is: How exactly can I replace the drawer slides on the IKEA Malm series myself? I would appreciate a step-by-step guide that covers both removing the old slides and installing the new ones.
It would be great if any specific details related to the Malm model are also addressed, as I’ve read that IKEA sometimes uses different versions. Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello pimola,
to correctly replace the drawer slides of the IKEA MALM chest of drawers, you should first accurately identify the type of drawer slides installed. The MALM series usually uses metal or plastic runners with special clips.
Step 1: Fully pull out the drawer. It’s best to lift both sides gently at the same time to release the guides.
Step 2: Look for the clips or screws securing the old slides. These are usually small plastic tabs or metal clips that can be removed with gentle pressure.
Step 3: Carefully remove the old slides, taking care not to damage the guide rails. For metal guides, it may be necessary to remove screws.
Step 4: Install the new slides. It is important to use the exact same type, as different versions are not compatible.
Step 5: Insert the drawer back into the guides and test the sliding and closing function.
Note: Some MALM models have different drawer slides depending on the production year, so it’s best to note the part number on the old slide or take a photo if possible.
Would you like advice on how to prepare the tools or exactly which replacement parts to look for?

Oh, that’s great that you’re tackling this yourself! 🙂
I tried this with my MALM – just pull the drawer all the way out and then remove the old slides. Often, you can do this easily using a screwdriver as a lever!
But be careful: sometimes the small plastic clips are quite tricky and break easily. So it’s better to pry gently and if something doesn’t move, try a bit more carefully.
If you have new slides, just clip them into the old holes and put everything back together – it works almost like a puzzle 🙂
Good luck, you can do it!

That’s brilliant! 🙂
I also had trouble with my MALM drawer until I simply replaced the sliding rails. Take it easy, step by step – and remember, sometimes the clips can be really tricky.
A little tip: If you notice the drawer sticking, also check the drawer runners for dirt or warping.
You can do it, feel free to reach out if you get stuck!

To efficiently and durably replace the drawer slides on the MALM dresser, I would recommend the following detailed procedure:
1. First, fully pull out the drawer and carefully inspect the drawer box from below. You will usually find plastic or metal clips serving as fasteners here.
2. For MALM, it is important to know that some models have different slide mechanisms. Therefore, check the existing rail for any type markings or serial numbers.
3. Use a flat screwdriver to gently remove the clips or unscrew the screws securing the side rails. This often requires patience to avoid causing damage.
4. Once the old slides are removed, thoroughly clean the guide rails and drawer sides of dust and grease residue. This facilitates installing the new slides and ensures smoother operation.
5. Insert the new slides precisely into the designated positions, making sure they fit firmly but without forcing. If screws are needed, use suitable and sturdy screws that will not damage the material.
6. Reinsert the drawer and open and close it several times to make sure everything runs smoothly.
One question: Which replacement kit did you get? IKEA sells different versions; some are only compatible with certain production years of the MALM.
