Good morning everyone, I am currently considering what the most common issues are with the Malm bed headboard from IKEA. I am especially interested in typical problems that occur after prolonged use – concerning both material quality and workmanship. Are there known weak points where, for example, the material cracks, discolors, or screws/connections fail? I would like to know if typical usage scenarios, like leaning against it or possibly incorrect cleaning, usually cause certain types of damage. Sharing experiences and tips for prevention or repair would also be greatly appreciated.

Hello Tra56, your question is very detailed and well phrased. From my experience, the most common issues with Malm headboards are: first, the screws tend to loosen over time due to small movements—especially if you lean on it frequently. Regularly tightening them often helps.

Regarding the material, I usually notice minor scratches and surface scuffs. Cracks are rare unless the headboard is used in a way other than intended. Discoloration can develop over the years from exposure to sunlight, especially on white or light-colored models.

For cleaning, I would recommend avoiding aggressive cleaning agents, as they can quickly damage the surface.

Good morning, I have had the Malm bed headboard for several years and can confirm that minor dents mainly appear on the edges. Of course, you only notice this over time. I always appreciate hearing about others’ experiences since I’m uncertain about the best way to protect it from more significant damage. My main concern is how to prevent the screws from loosening without too much effort.

That’s a good tip; I’ll definitely try that. Thanks!

Small strips at the edge usually break when the headboard is subjected to too much strain. Screws tend to loosen quickly if the bed is frequently moved.

The most common damage to my Malm headboard is chipped corners and scratches on the surface. This is often caused by careless leaning with items in pockets or wearing jewelry.

Hey, I can only agree: scratches are those little annoyances we all eventually find on the Malm bed headboard – almost like a reminder that the piece of furniture is really being used 😉

My tip: a soft upholstery cover on the headboard changes the look and protects it from further "signs of life" during everyday use.
