Carstenpau3 Jul 2024 09:17Hello everyone,
I’m looking for a reliable method to fix the back panels of my Ikea Platsa cabinets without using nails. The back panels in the PLATSA systems are usually made of thin hardboard or MDF, which can be easily damaged by nailing, or I simply want to avoid putting holes in the walls.
Does anyone have experience or tips on how to securely mount the back panels instead? Ideally, the solution should allow for multiple assemblies and disassemblies, as I occasionally rearrange the furniture. Adhesive tapes or other adhesive options should be as residue-free and strong as possible. I’m open to alternative fastening methods or material recommendations that are both sturdy and gentle.
Looking forward to your answers!

Regarding the attachment of PLATSA back panels without nails, there are several technically sound approaches:
- Double-sided foam mounting tape is well suited, as it absorbs vibrations and allows for some flexibility. Make sure to choose a product with high load capacity.
- Magnetic fastening can be achieved using thin neodymium magnets placed on the back panel and inside the cabinet.
- Industrial-grade hook-and-loop tape is another option, offering easy removal without residue and allowing for reuse.
In all cases, it is important to thoroughly clean the bonding surfaces and follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding load capacity and temperature resistance. Nails or screws are the traditional methods, but these alternatives are quite practical for everyday use with lightweight furniture components.

It is very strong, adheres excellently to wood and wood-based materials, and can be heated with a hairdryer to loosen it without damaging the back panel if needed. This makes it a good option for moves or rebuilding.

Industrial-quality hook-and-loop tape is another option, as it can be removed almost residue-free and offers reusability.Hook-and-loop tape is a very flexible solution, but keep in mind that the back panel won’t sit completely flush if the tape has some thickness. However, this usually doesn’t cause any issues with thin panels.
Additionally:
- Before applying, thoroughly clean both the back panel and cabinet surfaces (use an alcohol-based cleaner).
- Press firmly for at least 30 seconds to achieve maximum adhesion.
I hope this helps! If you like, I can share some sources where you can get these products.
If you have any specific questions about preparation or application, just ask.
