Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring how to install IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets so that the doors and drawers have a soft-close function, which is often standard in more expensive kitchen cabinets. Since IKEA offers the Metod series both with and without soft-close mechanisms, my question is: Is there a way to retrofit existing IKEA Metod cabinets without factory-installed dampers to include a soft-close feature?

I am particularly interested in which components are needed, whether the installation is complicated, and if any special tools are required. It would also be helpful to know if there are DIY-friendly solutions or if it is necessary to purchase specific IKEA dampers to ensure compatibility.

Has anyone here had experience retrofitting soft-close to IKEA Metod cabinets? What steps are involved, where exactly are the dampers installed, and what should be taken into account to ensure the function works smoothly?

Thank you very much in advance for your tips and advice!

You need the original soft-close dampers from IKEA. They simply snap into the hinge or function as drawer dampers. Assembly is easy; no special tools are required, just a screwdriver. Simply replace the old hinges with the soft-close ones.

For retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on IKEA Metod cabinets, I recommend the following approach:

- First, check whether your cabinets are equipped with standard or soft-close hinges. For standard cabinets, you can purchase the soft-close versions separately.
- IKEA offers different types of hinges with integrated soft-close functions that are specifically designed for the Metod system, which simplifies installation.
- For drawers, there are also special dampers that can be mounted either on the outside of the drawer or integrated into the slides.

Installation usually involves replacing the existing hinges or retrofitting the dampers on the drawers. Simply remove the door or drawer, attach the new soft-close components, and reassemble. Pay close attention to the correct positioning of the dampers to ensure the soft-close works smoothly.

A key tip: Make sure the hinges and dampers match the specific door or drawer type (e.g., internal or external hinges), otherwise the closing mechanism will not fit properly.

If you have some DIY skills, the effort is manageable. For specific questions, you can refer to IKEA’s installation instructions, as the soft-close versions are well documented.

I hope this helps you.

That is correct. However, it is important to know that IKEA uses different soft-close systems for Metod cabinets. For doors, the integrated hinges with built-in damping are primarily used. For drawers, there are dampers that are usually attached to the slides.

One possible alternative is universal soft-close dampers from the accessories market. These can sometimes be retrofitted but may be somewhat complicated in terms of function or installation.

For installation, you will need:
- A screwdriver or cordless drill
- Suitable hinges/dampers
- Possibly special mounting components, which IKEA offers as spare parts

I strongly recommend carefully following the installation instructions and checking compatibility before assembly. It can also be helpful to temporarily remove the doors or drawers to make it easier to attach the dampers.

In summary: The simplest and most reliable solution is to install the original IKEA soft-close hinges and dampers.

Great topic! 🙂 I converted our Metod cabinets myself, and it’s definitely doable!

The key is to be patient when removing the old hinges and to position the new soft-close components very precisely. Sometimes you need to experiment a bit until everything swings smoothly.

If you think it’s not working right away, don’t give up – it’s really fun once the doors close gently!

And honestly, it’s absolutely worth it. A soft-close feature is a small luxury that makes everyday kitchen life much more pleasant!

I’m happy to answer this question in more detail:

When retrofitting soft-close features, you should first distinguish whether it concerns door hinges or pull-outs.

For doors:
- IKEA offers hinges with integrated soft-close function that softly slow down the closing of the door.
- These hinges simply replace the standard hinges. Remove the door, unscrew the existing hinges, screw in the soft-close hinges, and rehang the door.
- Pay attention to correct adjustment, as soft-close hinges usually allow for slightly more fine-tuning.

For pull-outs:
- Sometimes small dampers are attached to the rail or to the pull-out itself.
- These dampers are easy to install, usually with screws or clips.

Tools:
- Phillips screwdriver
- For some dampers, a flathead screwdriver may be needed

Tips:
- Check compatibility with your existing hinges before purchase.
- Take your time adjusting; soft-close only works perfectly when the door or drawer front is properly aligned.
- If available, use the IKEA instructions specific to the fitting type.

By following these steps, you will be very satisfied with the result.
