Hello everyone, I am currently working on a project to assemble several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with soft-close drawers. I want to ensure that the assembly is not only neat and sturdy but also that the soft-close function of the drawers works optimally afterwards. My specific question is: Are there any special tips or steps to keep in mind when assembling the Metod cabinets with the soft-close drawers, especially regarding the installation of the drawer slides, adjusting the damping, and the correct alignment of the fronts? I would also appreciate any advice on how to avoid common mistakes that could affect the soft-close mechanism. I have already reviewed the IKEA instructions, but sometimes the guidance is a bit brief. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
Regarding the weight capacity for soft-close drawers: the IKEA Metod system is designed for typical kitchen loads. If your drawers become very heavy, the soft-close mechanism may reach its limits – in that case, only more heavy-duty slides or IKEA’s special heavy-load options will help.
Otherwise, make sure the drawer is properly engaged when inserting it. If it sticks, the slide or the damper may not fit perfectly.

- Adjust the front sideways,
- change the height of the front,
- and fine-tune the tilt.
If you have a front that doesn’t close perfectly straight, you can almost always fix it without removing the entire drawer. By the way, the soft-close function only works if everything is perfectly aligned – otherwise, it will either close hard or stay open.
My tip: really take your time with this fine adjustment; I’ve gained a lot from it.

How can I precisely tell if the drawer slides are installed correctly?Reliable reference points are the existing grooves and drill holes intended for positioning. In addition, you should check:
- The parallelism between the left and right slides using a ruler.
- The squareness of the slides relative to the cabinet bottom with a protractor.
- The smooth vertical movement of the drawer, to prevent the slides from jamming.
Measuring tools are always more helpful than just relying on visual judgment. If you have a precise spirit level, that is also very suitable.
Regarding weight and soft-close: Adjustment via the regulator or shifting the damper is limited with Metod. For extremely heavy drawers, it may be advisable to add reinforcements or use professional-grade drawer slides.

If you have a front panel that doesn’t close completely flush, it can almost always be fixed without removing the entire drawer. This is important! Many people underestimate the adjustment options.
Here is a brief checklist for mounting and adjusting the front panel:
- First, simply insert the front panel and roughly align it.
- Then turn the side adjustment wheels and check if the front is flush with the cabinet body.
- If there is any tilt at the top or bottom, use the tilt adjustment to correct it.
- Finally, check that the front does not rub or jam when opening and closing.
By following these steps, you can prevent later functional issues with the soft-close system. The smooth interaction of all parts makes the difference!
