Wallace413 Jan 2023 10:07Hello everyone, I need your help: I have a relatively small Ikea Pax wardrobe and want to maximize the storage space inside. It’s not just about storing items but also about smart organization, so I can neatly fit as many clothes, shoes, or accessories as possible without losing track of everything. Does anyone have good tips or tricks for optimizing a compact Pax wardrobe through clever interior adjustments or additional solutions? I have already considered extra shelves, boxes, and hanging rods, but I’m unsure how to best combine these or if there are specific products or DIY ideas that are especially effective. Are there practical experiences that have significantly increased storage space in small Pax wardrobes? Thanks in advance for your advice!
Hello Wallace41, a very comprehensive topic – we love that!
Basically, the key to more storage space in small Pax wardrobes is modular interior design. Here are a few detailed steps and considerations:
- First, make use of the available room height by thinking vertically. If you have installed only one hanging rod, consider whether you can fit two one above the other – this way you can easily separate shirts and pants.
- You can also add shelves at shorter intervals; however, keep in mind they should not be too shallow, otherwise folding or stacking won’t work well.
- Drawers are especially practical because they organize storage space efficiently and help you store small accessories without mess.
- Use boxes or baskets that fit the width of the cabinet – this avoids wasted space on the sides.
- A often overlooked option is the inside of the wardrobe doors. With special hooks or small storage containers, you can store belts, jewelry, or scarves there.
- It is also important to regularly declutter the wardrobe to prevent unnecessary items from blocking storage space.
One more thing: What are the exact dimensions of your Pax, and what do you typically want to store in it? Are there any restrictions for the layout (e.g., no drilling allowed), or do you prefer products only from the Ikea range? In practice, it helps a lot to sort the contents by category – for example, all shoes together, t-shirts folded, jackets hung – and then arrange the interior accordingly.
Looking forward to your details so we can analyze this together more precisely!

Hello Wallace41,
here is a brief guide on how to get significantly more storage space out of a small Ikea Pax wardrobe.
1. Get an overview: Empty the entire wardrobe and assess your belongings (types of clothes, quantities, accessories).
2. Use flexible organization: Purchase additional shelves and drawers. Drawers with various compartments are especially helpful for keeping things tidy.
3. Install double hanging rods: This is particularly useful for short garments (shirts, blouses) to use the vertical space more efficiently.
4. Utilize the inside of the doors: Hooks and storage boxes on the doors are an often underestimated storage solution.
5. Use stackable storage boxes: Essential for socks, scarves, and handkerchiefs.
6. Use vacuum bags: For seasonal clothing you don’t currently need, vacuum bags save a lot of space by removing air.
Finally, I recommend not overfilling the wardrobe. Too much stuff makes access difficult and increases clutter.
If you like, I can also send you a list of specific Ikea products that have proven to be very effective.

Are there any restrictions on how it can be divided (e.g., no drilling allowed), or do you prefer products only from the Ikea range? Thanks for the detailed reply, TEBILO! My Pax measures 100 x 236 cm (width x height) and is 60 cm (24 inches) deep. A vertical division would definitely make sense because of the height, as I mostly have shirts, sweaters, and pants – no heavy coats. I’d prefer to store shoes separately outside, but a few bags and belts would need to fit inside. I don’t want to drill if it’s not absolutely necessary – Ikea solutions would be ideal.

What is your opinion on door solutions? Do they really make that much difference, especially with a 60 cm (24 inches) deep wardrobe?
One more general question: What interior fittings combinations have you seen that effectively cover all areas well in a smaller Pax? Basically, an all-around solution.

What do you think about door solutions? Do they really offer that much, especially for a 60 cm (24 inch) deep wardrobe?Definitely. Door solutions are often underestimated, especially in shallow depths. One reason why they are so effective: they utilize space that would otherwise go completely unused. For example, hook rails or small shelves for belts, scarves, watches, jewelry, or even fold-down storage elements.
This extra investment is worth it because it creates additional, easily accessible storage space without blocking functional areas inside the wardrobe.

What interior fittings combinations have you seen that cover all areas well in a small wardrobe like a Pax?A proven setup looks like this:
- At least two wide drawers at the bottom (for underwear, socks, smaller textiles)
- Two clothing rails one above the other (for shirts and trousers)
- Between the rails, 2-3 shelves for sweaters and T-shirts
- On top, an extra shelf for sprays, larger items, or foldables
- Door hooks for accessories
This combination creates a good balance between hanging and folded garments plus small items without wasting space.
