Hello everyone,

I recently purchased IKEA Platsa shelving units for my home office, but I’m facing the issue that the room is quite dark, so the shelves don’t really stand out.

My question is: What options are there to better illuminate PLATSA shelves in dark rooms without completely renovating the space or buying expensive specialized lighting? I’m especially interested in solutions that can be nicely integrated into the shelving design, and practical tips regarding the choice of light color and positioning of the light sources would also be helpful.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Interesting that almost everyone here relies on LED lighting. But are we sure this isn't a one-sided approach? LEDs are flexible, but they often produce a cold, technical light that doesn't necessarily brighten the room, rather it illuminates it in sections.

Perhaps it would be helpful to also use traditional ambient lighting or to add mirrors to the shelves. Reflective surfaces could optimize the available light.

This fits with what @difepeo said earlier. I will increase the room lighting by adding an extra ceiling light. However, I will approach using mirrors carefully since the room is small and the shelf is the dominant feature.

Exactly, I wanted to mention that as well. Sometimes people don’t think broadly enough here. Before investing a lot of money in shelf lighting, the entire room lighting should be planned. Reflective or at least light-colored surfaces already make a big difference.

Speaking of mirrors: You have to be careful not to disrupt a dark atmosphere if that’s not desired. In addition, mirrored surfaces on shelves with a lot of items are usually challenging.

[@Renegi] Thanks for the tip. I think I prefer to keep the shelf visually as simple as possible. The lighting is my main focus to improve both functionality and appearance.

Thank you all for your input!
