Hello everyone,
I recently purchased IKEA Platsa shelving units for my home office, but I’m facing the issue that the room is quite dark, so the shelves don’t really stand out.
My question is: What options are there to better illuminate PLATSA shelves in dark rooms without completely renovating the space or buying expensive specialized lighting? I’m especially interested in solutions that can be nicely integrated into the shelving design, and practical tips regarding the choice of light color and positioning of the light sources would also be helpful.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

[@difepeo] Your concerns are valid. Unfortunately, I cannot change the wall color at the moment.
Therefore, I will try installing the LED strips directly on the shelves, along with an additional light strip on the top of the shelving unit. If that is not sufficient, I will consider a combination with indirect lighting, as @libar49 suggests.

Be careful with LED strips: some have very narrow beam angles. That's true! I bought some with a diffuser, and it really makes a huge difference!
One must not forget: lighting is not only functional but also a design element. The Platsa shelves are relatively simple, so with a bit of creativity and experimentation, you can customize them individually. So why not consider LED strips in cool colors or as a highlight along the side panels?
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! This thread has really given me a lot of ideas.
A brief summary of the good solutions I’m taking away:
- Attach LED strips under the shelves with warm white light
- Additional LED strip on top of the shelf for accent lighting
- Possibly indirect lighting on the back of the shelves facing the wall
- Pay attention to the light output level (about 500 lumens/meter)
- Diffuser films for better light distribution
I will share how the implementation goes.
