Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to use the IKEA Platsa system for a specific area where pets – specifically cats – are active. I am wondering about the best ways to secure Platsa furniture to prevent tipping, shifting, or any other hazards for the animals.

I have some basic ideas on how to attach the modules to the wall or stabilize them with appropriate weights, but I would like to know what experiences members of this forum have had.

Are there particular methods to secure Platsa furniture so that it remains safe and stable even with lively pets around? Which materials or accessories from the IKEA range or other suppliers work particularly well?

It is important to me that the solution is both safe and practical – meaning easy to install and maintaining the modular flexibility of Platsa.

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hey anlutar,

I completely understand your desire for safety. Cats are true acrobats and love to explore things that really aren't meant for them. 😊

In my setup, I secured the PLATSA units using the included wall brackets – that’s the basic requirement. On top of that, I added anti-tip brackets, the kind often used for cabinets. These are not only available at IKEA but also at any good hardware store.

It’s important to secure the furniture to the wall using straps or metal bands like these. Additionally, I placed pebble stones or heavy decorative items on the lower shelves to further prevent tipping.

And honestly: the cats haven’t really climbed on them much since the furniture is firmly fixed. A good combination of mechanical securing and weight has been the key to success for me!

It’s interesting how quickly anti-tip restraints are mentioned here, but honestly: how many people actually check these restraints regularly?

Such a strap is only as effective as its installation – and when cats start climbing on them, these attachments can still come loose or even break. I would also recommend loading the cabinets with heavy interior fittings, as wall anchoring alone often isn’t enough.

Additionally, one should not underestimate that PLATSA, due to its modular design, loses stability if not assembled thoughtfully. Those who assemble only single modules underestimate the risk.

So: anti-tip restraints are the minimum requirement but not the solution to all problems.

Hello anlutar and all interested,

I would like to suggest a slightly different approach that has proven effective when pets damage furniture.

Besides wall mounting, as already mentioned, it is important to consider exactly how the load occurs. Cats often jump up and cause dynamic loads. This means that furniture must be secured in a way that it can also withstand vibrations.

Therefore, I recommend:
- Properly connecting the elements, not just stacking them, but assembling the modules using IKEA’s own connectors.
- Using high-quality wall anchors for the wall mounts, preferably ones that hold in solid brick or concrete.
- Ideally placing the bottom module on the floor, and equipping it with non-slip felt pads on smooth floors – this prevents the furniture from shifting.
- Alternative securing measures can include attaching crosswise boards to the back of the furniture (using brackets) to increase lateral stability.

That is absolutely correct – paying attention to quality and workmanship is especially worthwhile here!

I hope this gives you some new ideas!

To complement the previous contributions, I would like to systematically summarize the key steps for securing IKEA PLATSA furniture for pets:

- Always use the wall mounts provided by the manufacturer and ensure they are installed with appropriate anchors on a load-bearing wall.
- Maintain modularity: Use the IKEA connectors (joining brackets or metal angles) between the PLATSA modules to ensure a unified structure.
- Additional securing: Anti-tip straps are recommended. These should also be regularly checked to ensure they are firmly attached.
- Weight distribution: Heavy items should be placed in the lower section to keep the center of gravity low and minimize the risk of tipping.
- For smooth floors: Use non-slip pads under the bottom module to prevent sliding.

All these points are essential to maintain long-term stability and prevent injury risks for pets.

This has been confirmed through tests and official safety recommendations for furniture in homes with children and pets.
