gianluigil12 Jun 2020 14:23Hello everyone,
I recently purchased an Ikea PAX wardrobe and made sure to assemble it correctly. However, I’m concerned that the painted surfaces, especially the inner sides of the wardrobe, are quite prone to scratches. Since I plan to use the wardrobe for both clothing and some more delicate items, I’m wondering: What is the best way to protect the surfaces and inner sides of an Ikea PAX wardrobe from scratches or other damage? Are there specific protective films, special maintenance methods, or maybe recommendations for shelves or similar accessories that have proven effective? I want to avoid the wardrobe showing signs of wear after a short time, especially since it is the relatively expensive PAX version. Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hello gianluigil,
First of all: Your concern is justified, as the painted surfaces of PAX are not very resistant to scratches, especially when hard objects with sharp edges are placed or moved on them.
Here are some recommendations on how to protect your cabinet:
- Protective film: There are transparent self-adhesive films designed specifically for furniture surfaces. You can cut these to size and apply them to the relevant areas. Make sure to choose a high-quality film so it does not start peeling off after just a few weeks.
- Shelves with protection: It often helps to place a thin textile or felt mat under the shelves, especially for glass or wooden shelves, to avoid abrasion.
- Careful handling: For heavier items, it is best to place a fabric pad underneath or use spacers to prevent direct pressure on the surface.
- For doors and drawers: Be sure that no dirty or rough parts cause scratches; foam or felt strips can be applied as edge protectors here.
In addition, you can regularly clean the surface with a mild furniture cleaner that does not contain harsh ingredients to preserve the paintwork. I hope this helps you for now!

Hi gianluigil and all PAX fans,
I completely understand the issue! The PAX wardrobe surfaces look great but can sometimes be a bit delicate – welcome to the club!
Here’s a little secret tip: I used a self-adhesive protective film on my doors, originally meant for car paint. Yeah, it sounds fancy, but it works really well!
I also always put felt pads under decorative or other items. Not only does it look nice, but it also prevents nasty scratches. And if you’re curious about what else helps – try putting something soft under your items, between the cabinet base and so on.
One funny side note: my cat has already left a few marks, even though I gave him my bed ;-) So for me, that also means a few creative quick fixes.
Good luck with your protection project and stay relaxed! 😉

Good morning everyone,
I would like to share a brief guide and overview on how to effectively protect PAX cabinet surfaces from scratches, based on my experience and research:
1. Surface Preparation
- Surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned before applying any protective materials to remove dust and grease. This ensures better adhesion of films and adhesive tapes.
2. Protective Films
- There are various options, such as self-adhesive transparent films, laminate protection films, or special furniture pads that can be applied to surfaces. It is important to always consider the film thickness to prevent tearing under stress.
3. Use of Shelves or Mats
- A very effective method is to use rubber mats, felt, or foam strips under shelves to avoid direct contact.
4. Edge Protection
- In particularly stressed areas, such as door frames or drawer edges, I recommend applying felt strips. These significantly reduce abrasion marks.
Common Issues:
- Adhesive tapes with strong glue can damage the PAX surface.
- Films that are too thick can affect the appearance or peel off.
Conclusion: Using the right film, felt strips, and careful handling greatly extends the lifespan of the surface. I am happy to answer any questions about the individual steps.

I would like to add one point that is often overlooked in such discussions: the importance of proper care for painted PAX surfaces.
Regular, careful cleaning with a damp microfiber cloth and a mild cleaning agent prevents dirt from causing abrasive effects – otherwise, this can lead to scratches over time.
I also recommend using furniture wax or polish specifically designed for painted surfaces. This provides an additional protective layer. It is important that the product contains no abrasive particles and is easily absorbed.
Another protective factor is proper use: items should ideally be placed on a soft base. This protects against localized pressure and thus prevents damage.
In short: protective films are important, but without proper care, invisible micro-damages tend to remain.
