Hello everyone, I am planning to store my tools in an IKEA Pax wardrobe because I am looking for a flexible, space-saving, yet organized solution. My question is: what is the best way to use IKEA Pax for tool storage? Which modifications or interior fittings work particularly well to store a variety of tools efficiently while keeping them easily accessible? I am especially interested in tips on compartments, use of accessories, or custom modifications that can be implemented with Pax. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Basically, you should first consider the size of the tools and how much storage space is needed.

Thanks, fikeo, that’s an important point. My range of tools includes small screwdrivers, knives, and pliers, up to a medium-sized drill, sanding machines, and a few sets of wrenches. It would be great if you have tips on how to best combine storage for these various sizes. I am especially interested in solutions for organizing and preventing clutter, even with frequent access.

Wow, this topic is really interesting! I think it’s great how much you can do with Pax. I have also organized my tool collection in a Pax cabinet, and what works well for me are the following things: - Drawers for small parts, sorted by function or size - Magnets on the doors for screwdrivers and bits - Adjustable shelves that I can move in height depending on which tools fit inside A simple, flexible solution that’s enjoyable and very practical!

Great that several points have already been mentioned here. Additionally, I recommend using stronger concrete slabs if you are storing heavy equipment. Secure shelving boards with additional supports if necessary. Also, plastic boxes for small parts help to improve organization.

I wonder if using Pax is really the best solution for tool storage. There are specialized options available that offer better ventilation, greater durability, and systems specifically designed for tools. While Pax is flexible, the load capacity of the shelves could be an issue, especially with heavy power tools. Also, is interior lighting in Pax units actually practical for quickly finding tools? Would an open shelving system not be more efficient for easy access?

There are indeed specialized solutions that offer better ventilation, greater durability, and are tailored for tools.

That’s true; specialized systems can be very robust. However, Pax provides an excellent balance between customization, price, and appearance, especially if you plan to place the cabinet in a living or hobby room. The load-bearing shelves are often sufficient for typical household use. Regarding lighting: LED strips are a useful addition that can be easily retrofitted to significantly improve visibility.

Thanks to everyone for the support so far. I’m taking away a lot of suggestions. I’m especially interested in the combination of drawers for small parts and adjustable shelves. The idea of magnetic strips on the doors is great for screwdrivers and bits. Regarding Linavin’s concerns: I intentionally want a closed system to keep dust out and match the look to my workshop, but I’ll probably need to add lighting later. I would be interested to know if there are any experiences on how to make the inside of the cabinet particularly durable without exceeding the standard Pax accessories?
