ᐅ How can Ikea Hemnes furniture be securely attached to the wall?

gobrio55Hello everyone, I would like to know how to safely secure Ikea Hemnes furniture to the wall. I am specifically referring to Hemnes cabinets and dressers, which are relatively heavy and need to be stable over time to prevent tipping or, in the worst case, falling over.
I have seen that Ikea recommends certain brackets and screws in the instructions, but not all wall types are the same; there are drywall partitions, concrete, or brick walls.
Could you please explain how to safely attach the furniture to different wall types? What additional materials are needed, such as anchors or screws? And how can you be sure that the mounting will hold securely without risking damage to the furniture or the wall? Thank you very much for your help!

For most Hemnes furniture, Ikea recommends using the supplied safety brackets, which should be screwed directly into the wall.
- For concrete or brick walls, simple plastic anchors are suitable.
- For drywall, hollow wall anchors with a metal expansion mechanism should be used.
Always make sure to choose screws and anchors that are appropriate for the wall type and the weight to ensure the furniture is securely fixed.

For drywall partitions, you should use cavity anchors with a metal expansion mechanism. An interesting point, but the stability depends not only on the type of anchor but also on the depth of penetration into the material and the accuracy of the screw placement. For Hemnes furniture, it is advisable to align the mounting holes precisely and attach them to the side panels rather than only in the center of the back panel.
Furthermore, it is worth checking whether additional reinforcements, such as wooden battens behind the drywall, can be installed.
Even though Ikea provides standardized fasteners, these are not always optimal for every wall type. It is recommended to carefully analyze the wall structure and, if necessary, use higher-quality anchor solutions that better distribute the weight.

- For solid walls (concrete, brick), concrete anchors with appropriate screws are the best choice. Make sure the anchor and screw are rated for the weight of the furniture, for example, 8 mm (5/16 inch) anchors for heavy cabinets.
- For drywall, metal hollow wall anchors (e.g., toggle bolts) are recommended. These are designed specifically to provide stability in gypsum plasterboard.
- If the wall surface is very fragile or lacks stable points, an additional wooden batten (e.g., a slatted frame) can be installed as a mounting base. The furniture is then attached to this support.
- Make sure to correctly install the safety bracket from Ikea. The bracket prevents the furniture from tipping over and should always be used.
These measures minimize the risk of tipping and ensure a durable and secure installation.

Additionally, I would say: If you want to be absolutely sure, take the time to locate the ceiling joists or wall studs behind the drywall using a stud finder. Using a screw that goes directly into the wooden stud will definitely provide the most secure support for your Hemnes cabinets.
Otherwise, relying on standard anchors usually works fine—see the Hemnes collection—but I still recommend: better safe than sorry, especially with heavy furniture that can quickly become a hazard around children or pets.
And if you ever enlarge the screw holes in the furniture, it’s better to use the appropriate drill bit to prevent screws from jamming or the wood from splitting. This way, everything stays stable and intact.
