Hello everyone, I recently purchased an IKEA Hemnes piece of furniture and am now considering how to enhance it as a DIY project in an attractive and personalized way without compromising the original design.

I am looking for ideas that are practical—so not complete rebuilds, but rather additions or creative modifications that add both visual and functional value. I am interested in techniques such as upcycling, special paint finishes, incorporating other materials, and possibly small craftsmanship upgrades. How have you enhanced your Hemnes furniture, or what would you recommend to break up the typical, sometimes somewhat plain IKEA look?

I look forward to suggestions, including experiences on what works well and where it’s better to be cautious.

Oh, great topic! 😊 The Hemnes series can be customized really well!

Personally, I painted my dresser with chalk paint – it gives the wood a modern vintage look, and you can easily refresh the color anytime. Then I replaced the handles with old-fashioned brass ones, which adds a lot of character!

Another thing that works great is applying a thin layer of wax paste to the surfaces; it protects and gives a more premium feel. If you’re handy, you could even add small shelves or decorative trim to create more storage or highlights.

Don’t be discouraged – it’s best to try out small parts or drawers before working on the entire piece of furniture. Good luck and stay creative! 🚀

Simply sand down the doors and attach new handles.

Alternatively, apply a film – available in many styles and quick to do.

For those who enjoy DIY: screw on small moldings to change the look.

That sounds really cozy! I never quite imagined it before, but the combination of the vintage finish and the simple, sturdy design of Hemnes fits together perfectly.

Something I’d like to try is a combination of paint and custom-designed stencil patterns. That way, you get an interesting effect without completely changing the piece.

And since you mentioned brass handles: maybe try refreshing the handle material itself with some patina or a special bronze finish? That would really enhance the overall look.

Very important: in my opinion, anyone customizing Hemnes should make sure the furniture remains functional and stable. Otherwise, you might regret it later. 😉

I find the whole idea of simply repainting Hemnes furniture or swapping the handles a bit boring.

Why not question the whole concept? Hemnes is designed with a conservative appearance by default – so if you’re renovating anyway, why not experiment with completely different materials: for example, attaching old metal plates or leather accents to the fronts, or replacing the back panel with a striking patterned board.

It’s not always just about making something prettier, but also about adding unexpected touches that turn the furniture into a conversation piece. Who wants a pimped-up IKEA piece that still looks like it came straight out of the catalog? Personally, I prefer bolder approaches.

Hey, I think these “simpler” adjustments are perfect for getting started with DIY! You don’t have to go all out right away. Small steps often bring a lot of joy and give you the chance to enjoy the project.

Also:
- Changing handles instantly adds character.
- Chalk paints are great for creating effects.
- Adding small shelves or decorative moldings is both satisfying and practical!

I can only encourage you to start with a small idea and grow into it! And if you ever need help – just ask here! 👍😉
