Hello everyone,

I am planning to rearrange my kitchen a bit and am considering using the IKEA Metod cabinets as open shelving units. The question I have is: What is the best way to set up the Metod cabinets as open shelves to avoid the typical closed cabinet look, while still ensuring stability and a neat appearance?

I am particularly interested in tips for installation without doors, possible alternatives for back panels, the use of shelves or special dividers, as well as advice on load capacity and stability.

Does anyone have experience with this or perhaps creative solutions on how to use Metod elements openly without the shelves looking unstable or untidy?

Thanks very much for your ideas!

Hello gauron,

First, a point about stability: The core material of the Metod cabinets is generally sturdy, but their support mainly comes from the back panels and doors. If you omit the doors, it is advisable to at least install thin back panels made of HDF or MDF, as this significantly increases the cabinets’ stability.

- Alternatively, you can replace the back panels with thin but rigid sheets, such as acrylic or wood, to create transparency or a minimalist look.

- The shelves are compatible and can be adjusted in height flexibly, allowing for customized space organization.

- To emphasize an open character, you can also equip the cabinets with additional shelves made of wood or glass – glass shelves, in particular, create a light and airy feel.

- Finally, a tip regarding load capacity: Make sure heavy items are placed close to the wall and on the lower shelves to ensure stability.

I hope this helps you.

Exactly, that’s what makes the Metod cabinet so versatile! If you add a few nice baskets or decorative boxes, you can combine the open look perfectly with organization. 🙌

Also, I think it’s great to replace the back panels with colored boards or even omit them entirely if the cabinets are firmly mounted to the wall. This gives the kitchen a really fresh, modern feel—almost like a piece of furniture rather than just a kitchen unit.

A tip: using glass shelves adds even more lightness. My motto is light and airy instead of "cluttered." 😄

For open shelves with Metod, I recommend:

- Remove the doors and replace them with decorative shelves (wood or glass).
- Use at least a sturdy back panel for wall-mounted installation; alternatively, drywall or reinforcements fixed on the back side.
- Wall mounting is mandatory to prevent tipping hazards.
- Integrate lighting, such as LED strips, to enhance the open look.

Additionally, keeping things organized is important to maintain an open and tidy system. This means neatly arranged compartments, perhaps boxes for smaller items, and avoiding overloading.

Without a back panel and wall mounting, the cabinets become unstable and quickly look unattractive.

I have done it this way myself and would recommend this approach.
