Hello everyone, I am planning to mount an IKEA BESTÅ shelf unit on a drywall (gypsum board) wall soon. Since the BESTÅ system can be relatively heavy, especially when using doors and multiple compartments, I want to ensure the mounting is done properly and securely. My wall consists of standard gypsum plasterboards with a metal stud frame behind it, so it is not a solid wall. I am wondering which fasteners are best suited to support the weight long-term without damaging the wall or the shelf. I am also interested in whether it makes sense to install additional reinforcements behind the drywall, such as mounting plates or wooden battens, or if isolated anchors (wall plugs) are completely sufficient. Who has experience with safely mounting BESTÅ on drywall and can provide practical advice on which anchors or mounting systems offer the best load capacity? Thanks in advance!

For drywall, it is best to use special cavity anchors, such as toggle bolts or Molly bolts. Screw as many anchors as possible into the metal studs or fill the cavities with mounting plates. Regular universal anchors will not securely hold the shelf.

Hello leviki, your question is very detailed, which is great because there are some special considerations when dealing with drywall. Since the IKEA BESTÅ cabinet can be quite heavy, especially when loaded, a secure mounting is absolutely necessary. Basically, there are several options:

- If the drywall panels are mounted on a metal stud frame, you should try to screw into the metal profiles, as they provide the highest load capacity.

- Where there is no metal stud, you need to use special hollow wall anchors. Metal molly bolts or toggle bolts are preferable because they expand behind the panel and can support greater weight.

- Alternatively or additionally, you can attach a mounting plate or wooden battens to the wall, onto which the BESTÅ can then be mounted. This distributes the load better and increases safety.

- Be careful not to make the drill holes too large, so the anchors hold firmly.

I also recommend spacing the mounting points as widely as possible to better spread the load.

If you hang the entire cabinet at a single point, the risk that the drywall cannot support it is quite high. Wide mounting is always better.

I hope this helps with your planning!

This assessment is important and should definitely be taken into account.

To add an objective perspective: Mounting an IKEA BESTÅ unit on drywall requires careful selection of anchors and fixing points. Drywall panels typically have a thickness of 12.5 mm (0.5 inches), which alone does not provide a reliable support for heavy loads. Metal studs behind the drywall offer some support, but the load capacity of individual screws in these studs is limited.

A systematic approach would be:
- Use high-load metal hollow wall anchors (such as molly bolts or toggle anchors) at multiple evenly distributed points.
- Where possible, attach directly to the metal studs using appropriate screws.
- Install a wooden frame structure behind the drywall (either by opening the wall or within a cavity) if higher loads are expected.
- Check IKEA’s manufacturer guidelines or additional load charts for anchors.

Regardless, it must be ensured that the wall structure is not overloaded, as drywall cannot permanently bear large tensile or shear forces over a wide area.
