Hello everyone,

I will be moving soon and want to carefully dismantle my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and professionally reassemble them at the new location. I have several questions: How can I take apart the cabinets without damaging the materials or fittings? What should I pay special attention to during transport to avoid scratches or other damage? Is it better to completely remove the door hinges or leave them attached? Are there any specific tips for organizing small parts like screws and dowels to ensure nothing gets lost during reassembly?

I appreciate any experiences or ideas, especially from people who have done this several times with Metod cabinets. Thank you in advance!

Hey, great question! The last time I assembled my Metod cabinets, I treated it like a little patience game, haha. 🙂

One tip: Always stick the bags of screws to the corresponding parts with labeled masking tape, so you don’t have to play detective during assembly! Also, removing the hinges can be quite tricky – they’re a bit stubborn, but it’s worth taking them off to protect them.

And of course, protect the panels with blankets and store them in a safe place, otherwise you might end up with damaged corners in no time!

I think the whole dismantling thing with the Metod cabinets is overrated. Of course, being careful is important, but honestly: these units are sturdy and modular, and with a bit of experience, you can take them apart and put them back together three times without anything breaking.

If you get too worked up about it, you might lose your patience in the end. Just proceed methodically, label everything, and take photos – that’s all you need. The rest is just unnecessary worry, in my opinion.

For those who want to be absolutely sure, I have put together a step-by-step guide for disassembling and reassembling Metod cabinets:

1. Remove doors: First take off the doors by carefully unclicking the hinges.
2. Remove interior fittings: Completely remove drawers and shelves.
3. Secure the cabinet boxes: Do not keep the doors attached during transport to avoid damage.
4. Store screws and fittings systematically in small, labeled bags – ideally with notes indicating where each part belongs.
5. Store cabinet boxes upright during transport to maintain their shape.
6. Cover countertops separately with protective packaging.
7. When reassembling, ensure proper alignment and make small adjustments to the door hinges as needed.

Common mistakes include leaving doors attached and not organizing screws systematically, which makes reassembly unnecessarily difficult.

I hope this helps you!

Hello, I completely understand that moving an IKEA Metod kitchen can be challenging, especially if you want to fully disassemble the cabinets. Here are my recommendations:

- Be sure to allow enough time and have enough helping hands, as Metod components are modular but can be quite heavy and unwieldy.
- When dismantling, start by removing the doors, then take out the drawers and shelves. This helps prevent compression and damage.
- Another tip for organizing small parts: use small sealable containers or clean screw-top jars, and label them as well. This way, you won’t lose anything during transport.
- For transport, a blanket or bubble wrap provides ideal protection. It is also important not to transport the cabinet boxes lying flat, to avoid deformation.

If you have any further questions, I’m happy to help.

I think that’s very practical. I used bags before, but jars have the advantage that screws won’t fall out if, for example, they’re accidentally knocked over. Especially during a move, this is worth its weight in gold!

Thank you all for the detailed and thoughtful responses! I will definitely take the doors off their hinges and carefully sort the screws – your practical tips for storing small parts are very helpful. I will also make sure not to underestimate the importance of protecting the countertops and carcasses.

If anyone has specific experience with reusing old fittings or readjusting the door hinges during assembly, I would be very grateful for any advice!
