Hello everyone,

I will be moving soon and want to carefully dismantle my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and professionally reassemble them at the new location. I have several questions: How can I take apart the cabinets without damaging the materials or fittings? What should I pay special attention to during transport to avoid scratches or other damage? Is it better to completely remove the door hinges or leave them attached? Are there any specific tips for organizing small parts like screws and dowels to ensure nothing gets lost during reassembly?

I appreciate any experiences or ideas, especially from people who have done this several times with Metod cabinets. Thank you in advance!

First of all: good luck with your move! I once completely dismantled and reassembled my Metod cabinets – it was quite a challenge, but definitely doable. My tip upfront: take your time and plan the disassembly step by step. For me, it’s especially important to unhook the door hinges and organize the screws systematically.

What helped me were small bags or pouches that I taped to the inside of the doors with adhesive tape – I put all screws, nails, etc., in them. That way, nothing got lost during the reassembly later on.

How are you planning to handle the countertops? Their large size often makes transportation difficult.

Thank you for your reply, Demetrius! I plan to transport the countertops separately, preferably standing upright and wrapped in protective foil. In my case, they are laminate, so I hope they aren’t too fragile. I will also follow your tip about using small bags for the screws; that sounds very sensible.

I’m also curious: Are there any special considerations when dismantling the cabinets, for example, whether you should remove all doors first or the cabinet boxes? Or can everything just be taken apart freely?

First, detach the doors, then remove the shelves, and finally disassemble the carcasses. This way, everything stays more stable and is easier to handle. Make sure to keep the screws sorted and packed together.

A structured approach is essential for safely disassembling and reassembling IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets. From my experience:

- Always remove the doors completely, as the hinges are delicate and can be easily damaged.
- Remove interior components such as shelves and drawers before disassembly.
- Collect all screws and fittings by type and position in labeled containers.
- For transport, I recommend stacking cabinets upright if possible, rather than laying them flat, to prevent deformation.
- During disassembly and assembly, a cordless drill with the appropriate bit and a slim screwdriver for fine adjustments are helpful.

Additionally, old holes or damage should be checked and noted after disassembly to ensure a precise fit during reassembly.

In addition to the points mentioned, I recommend the following practical measures:

- Mark the cabinet parts (for example, left, right, top, bottom) to ensure faster and error-free assembly.
- Use stretch film or covers to protect the cabinets from scratches during transport.
- Only open clearly marked cabinets during transport or secure them well to prevent them from opening while moving.
- Remove all movable parts such as drawers and secure them separately.
- It is best to document the disassembly with photos of the current condition and each step, especially if multiple people will be involved in assembly or disassembly later.

This approach minimizes the time required and potential damage.
