Hello everyone, I recently purchased an IKEA Pax wardrobe with the matching drawers and now want to add a soft-close feature. My specific question is: What options are available to retrofit the existing drawers with soft-close functionality without having to replace the entire drawer slide? Are there any recommended modules or adapters that can be easily installed? I would also appreciate tips on installation, as I have no experience removing drawer slides. It would be helpful to know about any potential pitfalls or risks to ensure that my drawers remain stable and operate well after the retrofit. Thanks in advance for your experiences and suggestions!

Basically, with IKEA PAX systems, the drawer slides often already include some type of soft-close damping, or at least a mechanism that allows for slowed closing. If that’s not the case with your drawers, here are the common options:

- Replacing the entire drawer slides with soft-close models from IKEA or compatible third-party suppliers
- Adding supplementary soft-close modules that can be clipped into the existing slides
- Installing small damping buffers on the back of the drawer to soften the closing impact

A simple retrofit solution without changing the whole slide is rare because soft-close technology is usually integrated into the slide itself. It is very important when installing to align the slides precisely and hang the drawer properly; otherwise, the damping mechanism won’t function correctly. My recommendation:

- Remove the drawer and slides and check for compatibility
- Choose the appropriate soft-close set (usually IKEA PAX soft-close slides)
- Follow the instructions carefully step by step, especially regarding how to hang the drawer

How large is your cabinet and how many drawers are affected? Depending on the weight and size of the drawers, the load capacity of the soft-close mechanism varies, which also influences the choice.

I agree with that. There are occasionally products on the market that promise soft-close adapters which can be clipped onto existing drawers. However, the question is how reliable these solutions are in practice and how the extra effort compares to the expected result. I would also doubt that the same level of quiet operation and functionality is achieved as with fully integrated soft-close systems.

Additionally, it’s worth considering whether it’s worthwhile to keep old drawers just because of the soft-close feature if they are no longer running smoothly or are already sticking a bit. Instead, you could opt to replace them entirely with newer, better drawers that come with soft-close functionality and offer better stability. Of course, this is more costly and time-consuming, but it pays off in the long run.

You should also not underestimate that with non-IKEA drawers or cheap generic soft-close replacements, durability and closing behavior can vary significantly.

One more thing I’d like to know: do you mainly use the PAX drawers for clothing or heavier loads? That makes a difference when choosing the drawer slides.

Thanks for asking! I will primarily store clothing in the drawers, not particularly heavy items. The drawers are medium-sized, not those extra-deep versions.

My main concern is the comfort of closing them, since slamming without soft-close mechanisms gets really annoying over time. Since the drawers are used quite frequently, I prefer a solid solution rather than a makeshift adapter.

The idea of replacing the slides entirely is interesting, but I’m still lacking specific recommendations for compatible replacement parts that fit PAX exactly—if anyone has experience with this.

Also, I’m unsure how difficult it generally is to remove and reinstall the drawer slides, and whether I can manage this well on my own. Are there any special tips?

I’m grateful for any advice!

I had the same issue with my PAX wardrobe, which didn’t have soft-close drawers, and I didn’t want to buy new ones because I wanted to keep the original runners.

My tip for retrofitting: There are so-called soft-close dampers that you can attach to the drawer slides. These are small plastic or metal parts with built-in dampers that can be installed fairly easily—usually with screws or snap-on mechanisms.

For example, I attached these dampers to the back of the sliding rails. This noticeably slowed down the closing and prevented slamming. The result isn’t as smooth as integrated soft-close systems, but it’s a practical solution if you don’t want to replace the entire drawer slides.

For installation: Pull out the drawer, gently press the side rails or release the locks (IKEA often uses small plastic clips here), and remove the rail. Then fix the dampers in the appropriate spots. When reinstalling, pay close attention to correct alignment to avoid jamming.

Stay calm, it’s not rocket science but requires some patience and careful work. If something doesn’t fit right after installing, just loosen it and adjust again.

Hope this helps!
