Hello everyone, I recently installed an Ikea Metod kitchen and am happy with the look, but I am concerned about the durability of the cabinet fronts, especially regarding scratches. Since the fronts are made of coated wood, I want to protect them as best as possible from unsightly scratches that may occur through everyday use or cleaning. My question is: How can I protect Ikea Metod fronts against scratches? Are there any special care or protection methods you would recommend that won’t damage the surface or negatively affect the appearance? I appreciate any tips, from simple home remedies to products from specialty stores, that can help keep the fronts in good condition over the long term.

Hello Lalojo, that is a very good question because the surface of the IKEA Metod fronts is sturdy but not indestructible. To properly protect the fronts from scratches, I recommend following several steps: - First, avoid using harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the finish. Mild dish soap or special furniture wipes are more suitable. - Second, felt pads on handles or inside drawer rails are useful to prevent micro-damage from opening and closing. - Third, a thin layer of clear furniture wax or a special acrylic-based care polish can be applied. It is important to test these products first on an inconspicuous area. - Fourth, the correct cleaning technique matters: cloths with slight abrasiveness can cause micro-scratches, so it is better to use soft microfiber cloths. - Finally, a tip: the combination of careful cleaning and preventive application of a protective product significantly extends the lifespan of the fronts. How exactly do you process the fronts, are they matte or glossy, and how intense is the use? I would like to know this to provide more targeted recommendations.

I would recommend using clear protective films specifically designed for furniture. They can be removed without leaving any residue and provide effective protection against scratches.

Thanks for asking. The fronts have a matte white finish. The wear is fairly average—we cook daily and have two cats, so the surfaces have seen some use. I want to minimize visible scratches despite regular use. Your tips about furniture wax sound interesting—could you explain in more detail how to apply it properly and which product works best? Also, I’m curious whether this wax layer significantly changes the feel or appearance of the surface.

Furniture wax is good, but make sure it is specifically for lacquered surfaces. Apply thinly and polish well. This protects and makes minor scratches less visible.

Sure, happy to help! I recommend products specifically labeled as "clear" and intended for coated wooden furniture. These are often based on carnauba wax, which is very durable and not too thick. Apply it best with a lint-free cloth in a thin layer, then after waiting a few minutes, polish until a silky shine appears. Avoid waxes with color pigments, as these can cause discoloration. The finish remains matte and feels smooth without a coating effect. Important: don’t apply too often—every six months is sufficient. If you have cats, I also suggest regularly trimming their claws and possibly placing protective pads on critical spots, since pets can still cause scratches despite the protective layer. Did you have any other materials or kitchen areas you want to protect?
