Hello everyone,
Lately, I have been having frequent issues with the Billy shelves from IKEA that I have in my living room. The main problem is warping of the shelves and side panels, especially noticeable when the shelves are fully loaded. I am interested in learning how to effectively prevent this warping to maintain the stability and appearance of the shelves over time.
I primarily use the shelves for books, which adds to the weight load. I would like to know if there are any useful reinforcements, care tips, or modifications that are easy to implement. Experiences with moisture management or storage of the shelves would also be helpful.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

In response to Danial's question: When installed correctly, the risk of additional stress caused by metal brackets is minimal.
In fact, the brackets reduce torsion when placed in the right locations.
It is also important that the shelves are loaded evenly – localized damage to the furniture is often due to uneven weight distribution.

Thank you for the recommendations so far.
What do you think about special impregnations that can protect the wood from moisture?
Is a simple clear varnish sufficient, or should something more specialized be used?
I am also asking because the living room is somewhat more humid than other rooms.

For stronger protection, specialized wood stains or clear varnishes with added fungicides and moisture barriers are suitable. It is important that the finish remains breathable; otherwise, condensation and mold growth can occur.
Always test on an inconspicuous area before applying.
To continue the discussion: Is it advisable to reinforce the shelves yourself, for example by strengthening them with aluminum profiles or other wooden strips?
Or is this counterproductive because it overstresses the original material thickness and thus increases the risk of warping?
