Hello everyone, I am planning to paint my IKEA Besta shelving unit myself and then seal it. I want to achieve a smooth, professional-looking finish that is durable and reliably protects the surface. My question is: What surface preparations are necessary for the Besta panels (mostly melamine-coated chipboard) to ensure good adhesion of the paint layer? I’m also interested in which types of paint work best—such as acrylic paint, spray paint, or brush-on paint—and which sealing product is best to protect the paint without negatively affecting the gloss or texture. Are there any special tips regarding application, drying times, or recommended tools? Thank you in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

The most important first step is a thorough cleaning and lightly sanding the melamine-coated surface with fine sandpaper (grit 220). After that, it is best to apply a primer suitable for plastic or melamine surfaces. For the paint, I recommend acrylic paint, which can be applied well with a brush or roller. To seal the surface, I suggest a clear, matte acrylic finish as the final coat. Important: Don’t forget to sand lightly between coats and allow sufficient drying time.

Regarding the preparations: Melamine surfaces are generally difficult to work with because they are very smooth and slightly water-repellent. Light sanding with a fine abrasive pad or 220-grit sandpaper is essential to roughen the surface. Without this step, the paint will hardly adhere. A primer with an adhesion promoter or a so-called universal primer for plastic melamine is, in my opinion, indispensable. A high-quality water-based acrylic paint is particularly suitable. It provides an even finish, dries quickly, and has low odor. For sealing after painting, I recommend using a matte or satin matte acrylic varnish; this preserves the appearance and protects the paint from scratches and moisture. Applying with a fine foam roller or a paintbrush ensures a smooth result. Drying times should follow the product instructions, usually 12 to 24 hours per coat at room temperature. Intermediate sanding with 400-grit sandpaper further improves the finish. These tips are based on various personal renovation projects with IKEA furniture.

Hey, I’ve painted and sealed the Besta shelf twice myself – it looks fantastic once you get it right! 🙂 The key is really sanding it first so the paint adheres properly. I always use a primer designed for plastic; otherwise, the paint tends to peel off quickly. For painting, I use spray paint because it creates a smooth, even finish without brush marks. When sealing, I apply a matte clear coat to keep the cool look while still protecting the surface. Always be patient and let each layer dry thoroughly—it definitely pays off! You can do it—just go for it! Your Besta will be a real eye-catcher!
