Dareo49Hello everyone,
I am planning to better organize our IKEA Metod kitchen to create more overall storage space. I came up with the idea of integrating a kitchen ladder since we often use tall cabinets that should also be easily accessible at the top.
My specific question is: How can I integrate an IKEA Metod kitchen ladder in a practical and safe way so that it not only fits aesthetically but also effectively increases storage capacity by allowing easy access to hard-to-reach areas? Are there any proven designs or installation methods tailored specifically to the Metod system?
I would also appreciate hearing about your experiences installing kitchen ladders and what to consider for optimal use of space—such as beside tall cabinets or as a permanently installed part of the kitchen layout.
Thanks in advance for your tips!

How can I integrate an IKEA Metod kitchen ladder in a practical and safe way so that it not only fits visually but also effectively increases storage space by allowing easy access to hard-to-reach areas?Hey, great question! Installing a kitchen ladder directly into an IKEA Metod kitchen is an interesting idea. I would recommend first considering the height and how often you’ll use the ladder. If it will be needed frequently, a fixed rolling solution makes sense – this way you can easily roll it in front of the cabinet and then push it away again.
Have you thought about mounting the ladder on a track system? This provides more stability and safety, especially when you’re putting items away or retrieving things from above. Plus, it lets you keep the ladder within reach without having to constantly put it down somewhere.
Regarding storage space: you could use the area above the ladder for additional open shelves or decorative storage. This way you make the best use of vertical space, and the ladder basically becomes your access tool.
Just a small tip: make sure the steps are slip-resistant and that the ladder is well secured. This will extend the ladder’s lifespan and provide more comfort.
Good luck – I’m curious to see how your project turns out! 🙂

This way, you can pull out the ladder when needed and store it compactly otherwise. Make sure it is securely fastened to prevent slipping.

Are there any proven constructions or installation methods that are precisely tailored to the Metod system?Good question, I have personally installed a kitchen ladder combined with IKEA Metod tall cabinets and can share some installation tips:
- Attachment: The most stable method is a mounting rail fixed to the side of the cabinet. It is essential to observe the maximum load capacity of the rail as specified by IKEA or other manufacturers.
- Flexibility: I recommend a rail system with lockable rollers. This allows the ladder to be easily moved and secured without tipping over or slipping.
- Material & Design: Wooden ladders are usually lighter than metal ones, tend to look more premium, and can often be customized more easily in terms of color and finish. Metal ladders are generally more durable but can be more slippery. A suitable non-slip rubber on the steps is a must.
- Integration: If possible, the ladder can be stored conveniently on the inside of a cabinet door using a small hook or magnet, keeping it out of the way.
- Storage Efficiency: The ladder only indirectly increases storage capacity by making higher areas more accessible. I would also plan for open shelves or wall cabinets designed specifically for these higher zones alongside the ladder.
If you want, I can also describe my self-made sketch with measurements and mounting details. I just need to know the height of your tall cabinets and how much space you have planned for the ladder.
