Hello everyone, I have been using the Ikea Brimnes chest of drawers with several drawers for some time now and generally find the operation of the drawers good. However, depending on how full the drawers are or how heavy the items inside are, opening and closing can sometimes feel stiff or difficult. Therefore, I would like to know: What options are there to improve the operation of the Ikea BRIMNES drawers without affecting the appearance or stability of the furniture? Are there common adjustments, tuning tips, or practical DIY solutions that have proven effective in making the drawers easier and smoother to operate? I look forward to hearing about your experiences and concrete suggestions!

Basically, better drawer slides help. The originals are often cheap; replacing them with higher-quality roller or metal runners improves smoothness. Also, lubricate the drawers well, for example with silicone spray.

Hello elme65, to make the BRIMNES drawers slide more smoothly, I recommend thoroughly cleaning the guide rails first. Sometimes dirt and dust accumulate, which hinders the sliding. After that, you can treat the sliding rails with a suitable lubricant, such as silicone spray or a special furniture oil. It is important not to use greasy products, as they attract dust. You should also check if the drawers are properly aligned, since misalignment increases operating difficulties. If the drawers are too full, it is also helpful to reduce the weight or distribute it evenly. Many users also report that inserts or organizers help structure the interior and thus enable more even opening.

Hello elme65, to achieve a noticeable improvement in the operation of the BRIMNES drawers, I recommend the following multi-step approach:

- First, carefully inspect the existing plastic rails and rollers. They might show signs of material fatigue or deformation.
- Then, thoroughly clean the rails and rollers with alcohol or glass cleaner to remove all residues. Dust and dirt significantly contribute to stiffness.
- Next, check the condition of the guide rails: Some BRIMNES models use simple plastic glides for the drawers, which can swell due to moisture. In such cases, replacing them with high-quality full-extension metal runners may be the best solution.
- If that’s not an option, I suggest using silicone spray as a lubricant. It dries completely without leaving residue and does not attract dust.
- Additionally, you can attach brass bushings or PTFE pads to the bottom of the drawers if you experience noticeable resistance from underneath.
- Make sure to check the overall alignment of the furniture as well, since a slight tilt can cause jamming, making operation more difficult.
- As a last resort, converting to high-quality metal drawer slides is possible, although this will make assembly more complicated.

In summary: thorough cleaning, quality lubrication, accurate alignment, and replacement of runners if necessary are the key points. If you want, share more details about the condition of your drawers, how often they stick, or whether you notice any noises – then I can provide more targeted advice.

Regarding the improvement of the operation of Ikea BRIMNES drawers, the following points can be clearly stated: - The BRIMNES series uses standardized plastic rollers and guide rails, which are prone to dirt and wear. - Regular cleaning of the rails with a lint-free cloth and a mild cleaner is strongly recommended. - Lubrication with silicone- or PTFE-based sprays is suitable, as these do not attract dust and significantly reduce sliding friction. - Fine adjustment of the drawer slides can be done by loosening and retightening the screws, as misalignment causes increased friction. - If the load is heavy (many heavy items), upgrading to metal drawer slides with ball bearings is advisable. - The weight inside the drawers should be distributed as evenly as possible to avoid jamming. - For more ergonomic handling, drawer handles can be precisely adjusted or replaced if the original handle distributes pulling force unfavorably. Implementing these measures overall results in less effort required and smoother drawer movement.

Thank you all for the many tips so far! I especially plan to try the idea with silicone spray and checking the alignment. @PLOMA: You asked about the drawer condition – they are usually quite full because I store various small items in them. They tend to be stiff when closing, and sometimes there is a slight creaking noise. Occasionally, there are sounds when something gets caught. And yes, the furniture is standing on a slightly uneven floor; until now, I didn’t think that was very important. What would be the most affordable and practical way to level this out? Does anyone have any additional practical advice?
