Hello everyone, I am planning to install an IKEA Metod kitchen and want to customize the cabinets, especially by painting them. I am interested in how to best prepare and paint the cabinet fronts to achieve a durable and high-quality finish. Which types of paint are suitable for Metod fronts (MDF or particleboard), what should be considered when sanding and priming, and are there any tips for achieving an even, bubble-free result? I would also appreciate advice on alternative design options using films or tints. I look forward to your experiences and expert tips!

For customizing IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets, I recommend the following approach: First, thoroughly clean the cabinet fronts and, if necessary, lightly sand the surface to ensure good adhesion. For MDF fronts, a high-quality acrylic or two-component (2K) paint is suitable, as it is durable against scratches and moisture. Before painting, apply a special primer designed for wood or MDF to seal the material and improve the final result. Spray application is recommended for a uniform and bubble-free finish. Alternatively, you can use special DIY films, but these are less durable and prone to edge peeling.

Before painting, sand the surface with 120-grit sandpaper to create a matte finish. Then apply a primer and allow it to dry thoroughly. For painting, it is best to use spray paint for an even result. Alternatively, matte adhesive films can be applied if painting is not desired.

I can fully understand how important a nice finish is for the kitchen—especially with IKEA cabinets, which often look quite standard. I painted my own Metod doors and was initially unsure about the technique. Patience with sanding and intermediate sanding was key for me. I also got bubbles with the first coat, but good ventilation and slow drying helped improve the result. Go for it, it’s really worth it! If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to share some tips on suitable types of paint and brushes.

This is an important point. Bubbles often occur due to applying paint layers that are too thick or high humidity during drying. Therefore, it is recommended to apply thin layers and ensure sufficient ventilation. I also suggest using paints with good filling capacity and low viscosity that spread easily.

For a professional finish on Metod fronts, I recommend the following steps: 1. Degrease the fronts and lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper (at least 180 grit) 2. Apply a primer suitable for MDF or particleboard 3. Sand between coats and remove dust 4. Paint with a solvent-based two-component acrylic paint or a high-quality water-based paint, depending on the desired finish 5. Allow proper drying time and apply additional coats as needed 6. Final sanding with an ultra-fine sanding pad for a perfectly smooth surface This method ensures a durable and long-lasting finish.
