Bronislawn10 Feb 2020 18:42Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to creatively enhance my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and am looking for ideas that are both creative and practical. The cabinets themselves are quite simple and functional, but I personally feel they lack a certain charm or individual touch that would make the space more personal. I am interested in aesthetic accents that can be added with little effort, as well as more permanent changes like surface treatments, handles, or fronts that significantly improve the look.
I am particularly interested in tips on the following points:
- Options for surface design of the kitchen fronts (e.g., paint, vinyl wrap, staining)
- Types of handles or their replacement with visually appealing alternatives
- Creative additions that enhance the overall kitchen atmosphere (e.g., lighting, decorative elements, open shelving)
- Unusual ideas or experiences that have worked well for you
Looking forward to your experiences and suggestions on how to combine the functional Metod kitchen base with a personal style!

To effectively and sustainably customize your Metod kitchen cabinets, I would recommend breaking the process down into several steps:
- Front design: Metod fronts come in smooth or textured versions. If you are working with painted surfaces, a high-quality spray finish using RAL colors is an option. Applying veneers (real wood veneer or wood-effect finishes) with special adhesive can also look very elegant. For vinyl wrapping, pay close attention to quality to avoid a cheap appearance.
- Handles: Besides simply swapping for other IKEA models, consider combining classic knobs with unusual materials such as brass, copper, or stained wood. In addition to individual handles, handle strips that are designed as a decorative element can also be effective.
- Lighting design: Integrating LED strips, preferably dimmable and with warm color temperatures, can completely transform the fronts and work surfaces. It’s worth considering smart lighting systems (e.g., Philips Hue) to adjust the atmosphere depending on the mood.
- Spatial composition: Open shelving filled with decorative items often blends better than closed cabinets and creates a lighter room feel. When choosing materials here, it is crucial to consider color harmonies and proportions.
- When implementing these ideas, I strongly recommend creating small sample areas first to test how the materials and colors work in your space. The choice of the right primer and sealant also affects durability.
Personally, I have always been fascinated by brass handles on Metod cabinets and combinations of dark fronts with light wood—this can surprisingly conceal the typical kitchen cabinet look.
What type of countertop do you have, and in which room will the kitchen be located? These factors often significantly influence material and color choices.
Super interesting question, Bronislawn! I really like your idea of customizing Metod!
I painted my cabinet fronts myself using a special chalk paint from a good manufacturer – it gave the kitchen a stylish shabby-chic vibe. The paint applies easily and gives the furniture a soft, modern look. Afterwards, I replaced the old cabinet handles with delicate brass-colored ones – it looks really elegant!
A small tip: installing warm white LEDs under the wall cabinets creates a cozy atmosphere and is very practical at the same time.
Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t look perfect right away; a bit of experimenting is always worth it! Feel free to ask if you need help with a specific part of your project – there are many creative minds here!
Good luck and most importantly, have fun redesigning!
