Hello everyone, I am planning to move soon and need to dismantle my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets for that. Since I want to ensure the cabinets are neither damaged nor do any parts warp or break, I am looking for tips on how to carefully and smoothly take apart the Metod cabinets. I am especially interested in advice on the right tools to use, the proper order of dismantling, and how to best handle the many screws and fittings. It would also be helpful to know if there are any special tricks to avoid damage during disassembly and subsequent reassembly. Has anyone had experience dismantling the Metod series for a move and can provide detailed recommendations?

Is there a recommended method for detaching door hinges without damaging the door?In general, Metod hinges are quite sturdy. It’s important to first position the door so that the hinge spring can be released (usually by a small tab that can be opened with a flat screwdriver or with your fingers). Then carefully lift the door out of the frame rather than pulling it.
Also, make sure the door doesn’t sag during removal, as this can cause cracks in the veneer.

Take photos of every screw on each side, in case you forget where something belongs later! That’s a good tip—organized documentation saves time and stress during reassembly.
Overall: Disassembly requires patience and focused work to avoid any damage.

Additionally, I would like to highlight the following points:
- Make sure to fully loosen all screws before separating parts. Half-tightened or partially removed screws often cause the chipboard to tear out.
- If the cabinet is connected with dowels, do not pull forcefully. Instead, carefully pry it apart using a thin strip of wood or a similar tool.
- Laminated edges are very sensitive, especially in humid rooms. Disassembly should therefore take place in a dry environment, as the boards may swell otherwise.
How about your conditions for transporting and storing the disassembled parts? This also plays a major role in keeping the furniture intact during the move.

How are the transport and storage conditions for the dismantled parts on your end? Good question! I plan to transport the cabinet parts lying down, well padded and wrapped in blankets, inside a moving van. Storage will only be for a few days in dry rooms, with no special temperature concerns.
I think padding is key to avoid edge damage, but is it also essential to store the cabinet sides upright?
And one last question: With Metod, is it possible to reuse screws and dowels, or does each reassembly increase the risk of weak points? What have been your experiences?
