FunanonHello everyone,
I am about to move and want to protect my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets as best as possible. Since the cabinets are especially sensitive due to the doors and surface, I am looking for advice on how to prevent damage during transport.
Does anyone have experience with the best way to pack the cabinets or which materials work best to avoid scratches, dents, or other damage to the doors and sides?
I would also appreciate tips on whether it is better to disassemble the cabinets for safer protection or to transport them fully assembled.
Thank you in advance for your opinions and advice!

Great topic! When I moved last time, I completely disassembled my Metod cabinets and taped each door with painter’s tape in a cross pattern, then wrapped them well with bubble wrap – not a single scratch! 🙂
My advice: Take your time and pack everything carefully, and it will work out perfectly! You can do it!

Hello Funanon,
I would recommend the following:
- Dismantle the cabinets, as this reduces the risk of warping and scratches. The doors should be transported separately.
- Use bubble wrap for the doors and thick moving blankets for the sides of the cabinet boxes.
- Make sure the cabinets are well secured to prevent shifting.
- Store metal parts and hinges in sealed bags and label them clearly.
In general, disassembling offers more protection because the individual parts are easier to protect and less susceptible to impacts. Important: secure the doors when wrapping them to prevent swinging or edge damages.

For optimal protection of your Ikea Metod cabinets during the move, I recommend the following approach:
- Completely disassemble the cabinets to minimize mechanical stress on the joints.
- Pack the doors separately in sturdy bubble wrap and secure them to prevent rattling or banging.
- Cover the cabinet carcasses with thick moving blankets to avoid scratches.
- Avoid transporting cabinets lying down to prevent material deformation.
- Clearly label all parts to facilitate reassembly later.
These measures are based on experience and proven best practices for flat-pack and knockdown furniture.

I’m still curious: What is the best way to transport the (disassembled) doors? Some can be quite delicate, and otherwise, the edges might get damaged. Is there a particularly recommended packing method or materials for this?
Also, do you have any practical tips to make the disassembling and reassembling process more efficient? Maybe there are tricks to make sorting the many individual parts easier?
