Hello everyone, I recently assembled an IKEA Besta shelving unit with doors and noticed that the doors don’t close properly. Despite several attempts to adjust them, there is always a small gap or the doors rub against each other.

My question to the community: How can I adjust the IKEA Besta doors so that they close perfectly?

I am particularly interested in:
- What exact adjustment options do the hinges offer?
- Is there a specific procedure or sequence for the adjustment?
- When there are multiple doors, are there particular gaps or angles to consider?
- Is any special tool required for precise adjustment?

I want to avoid having to readjust them constantly and am looking for a long-term solution so the doors close flush and perfectly. Thanks for your tips and experiences!

The recommended procedure is:

1. First, adjust the height (align the door with the cabinet body)
2. Then, set the depth (fit the door to the cabinet body)
3. Finally, adjust the lateral offset for flush closing

Thank you for this clear instruction. A quick question for clarification: Does "set the depth" here specifically mean sliding the door in or out to prevent it from sticking out too far or protruding into the interior space? In other words, is it about the distance to the cabinet front?

Also, is there a simple way to measure or estimate this distance? Thanks!

Exactly. The depth adjustment changes the distance between the door and the cabinet body, ensuring the door doesn’t hang too loosely or press against the furniture frame.

You can check this distance visually by looking along the edge of the door from the front to make sure it neither protrudes too much nor is recessed too far back. Using a straight edge or ruler is helpful for this check. A gap of about 2-3 millimeters (0.08-0.12 inches) is ideal.

This is also important to ensure that magnetic catches or locking mechanisms engage properly.

The topic of adjusting hinges always makes me smile 🤓 – so small yet so crucial.

If all the screws are loose, adjusting won’t be any fun. So first, check the screws! Then follow toril’s instructions step by step.

One more little tip: If you need to adjust doors multiple times, it helps to loosen the hinges on the cabinet, align the door, and then slowly tighten the screws while holding the door in place. This way, it won’t slip back into the wrong position.

Alternatively, you can also check the plastic hinge cups at the Besta to see if they are excessively worn or warped. These have a strong influence on the adjustability.

If defective, replacement can help. It is rarely necessary, but if unexpected problems occur, it’s a useful backup option.

Additionally, a note: Some doors have small spacers underneath to ensure that the doors are aligned at the same height. These help with precise fitting. Check that they are positioned correctly, otherwise the doors may tilt and not close flush.
