Hello everyone, I am planning to equip my Billy shelves with doors and am looking for a detailed step-by-step guide on how to properly hang the doors. My main concern is to avoid potential pitfalls since I will be securing the shelf to the wall and want the doors to operate smoothly afterwards. Can someone explain how to mount the doors as precisely and securely as possible, including the preparation and adjustment of the hinges? What should I keep in mind to ensure the doors do not sag or become difficult to open later? Thank you in advance!

For preparation: It is important that the shelves are fully assembled before hanging the doors. Also, check if the pre-drilled holes for the hinges fit exactly. Depending on the model and age of the product, the drillings may vary slightly.

Do not use screws that are too long, as they could damage the material. For adjusting the doors: the position screws on the hinges control horizontal and vertical shifts, while the cam screw can move the door closer to or further away from the wall.

A tilted position causes the doors not to close properly.

Absolutely, the shelf needs to be level – I recommend using some wooden blocks or shims to compensate for any unevenness before you install the doors. :-)

If you’re unsure about a tool: a good Phillips screwdriver and a small Allen key are often helpful.

With the right tools, everything runs smoothly. And remember to leave the screws loose at first. Once the doors are in place, you have maximum adjustment flexibility. Good luck!

I always find it helpful to point out practical tips alongside the technical approach. For example, you can use felt pads or small rubber bumpers on the inside of the door to soften the impact. This also prevents the doors from slamming and protects the shelf material in the long run.

Small details like these, in my opinion, increase the lifespan of furniture with doors. They are quick to install, cost almost nothing, but add a lot of comfort. Hope this helps you a bit as well! :-)

One quick tip: When adjusting, always check from both the bottom and the top to ensure the door is perfectly parallel to the shelving unit. Otherwise, the gap won’t fit correctly later.
