Hello everyone,

Interestingly, the search function didn’t show any thread addressing the topic of tipping.

We are currently wondering how tipping is handled in construction...

What is usually given? Who receives what?
Or do people rather give a case of beer and a round of coffee and snacks instead?

How have you dealt with this, or what experiences have you had on this topic?

Still and sparkling water, as well as non-alcoholic shandy, have always been available on the construction site. Approximately 10 cases of water and the same amount of shandy were consumed. Food was only provided for the topping-out ceremony.

We didn’t give any tips.
But I think it depends on whether you pay a main contractor (general contractor) a lot of money, or if Uncle Karl and his friends are tiling the bathroom for you. If you get discounted or free help as a favor, I think tipping or giving small gifts is a nice gesture.
I once photographed a wedding for free and received a small gift basket and a €30 (about $33) voucher for a swimming pool, which I thought was a great idea.

Otherwise, on the main contractor’s construction site, we always provide water for everyone, and from time to time we bring a box of chocolates (Snickers, Knoppers, Duplo, and similar treats, plus some candies).

I always had water and non-alcoholic beer or shandy on the construction site, often coffee and cake, and sometimes gave a little something extra. They quietly took care of various additional tasks along the way. I once calculated it—it probably amounted to around 1500,-. In return, I always received reliable work: a few extra tiles here, some additional boards there, or an extra outdoor faucet... it paid off. And the people still recognize us today, waving and happy to see us.
