Hello everyone,
We received a great offer for Villeroy & Boch tiles at half price. The reason is that the batch does not exactly match the color of the regularly produced tiles and is therefore sold as a secondary color of first quality.
We need about 62 sqm plus waste and reserve, so at least 70 sqm (possibly a bit more since we won’t be able to reorder). That’s not a problem. We can get as many tiles as we want from this batch.
We are currently at the shell construction stage. The carpenter will start next week. This means we probably won’t need the tiles before May or later.
Can we store the tiles in the garage until then? The garage is also still under shell construction. It is missing the door, windows, and waterproofing of the flat roof.
Will the tiles be in the way? Are there any risks involved with storing them under these conditions?
What would you do?
22.50 €/sqm (about $24 per sq ft) for the desired Villeroy & Boch tile is definitely a strong price.
Good luck, milkie

However, you do have the risk of theft. Personally, I would accept that risk for a bargain – but it depends on your risk tolerance. In our area, builders have always stored a lot of materials on the construction site. Currently (for almost two weeks now), we still have about 40m (130 feet) of temporary fence panels lying on the street.
We also had to buy our parquet flooring early and store it in our old house (a bit over 200m² (2,150 sq ft)). Wouldn’t that be an option for you as well?

Theoretically yes, but in practice, transporting 70 square meters (sqm) of tiles (at least one pallet) isn’t something you can just do in one trip to the construction site, right? Or carrying them down to the basement and then back up. But yes, maybe it would be easier to do this so the screed can be laid without obstruction when the time comes.
Addendum: 70 sqm means 1500 kilograms (kg)!

And yes, I know what it means to store and transport such an amount. For us, it was "only" 1.4 metric tons (1.54 US tons), but more than two pallets, each about 1.6 meters (5.25 feet) high.

I definitely would not store these materials openly at the construction site. In our new development area, every second builder has experienced theft so far.
Either shortly before the house is completed—paint, wallpaper, drying equipment, tools—or entire scaffolding was dismantled during the shell construction phase. Construction has been ongoing since the beginning of the year, and at least once a week there are reports of theft. There are now even builders who spend the night in their only recently enclosed shell. A few have finished building and are already living there, and even their neighbors have had everything taken that wasn’t firmly fixed in place...
