Hello everyone,
Interestingly, the search function didn’t show any thread addressing the topic of tipping.
We are currently wondering how tipping is handled in construction...
What is usually given? Who receives what?
Or do people rather give a case of beer and a round of coffee and snacks instead?
How have you dealt with this, or what experiences have you had on this topic?

Does the interaction with postal/courier services and waste collectors change significantly when moving into a house?
I can honestly say that I have seen representatives of the services mentioned above fewer than half a dozen times since I moved into my current apartment in 2014. Even since Corona and working from home, they just ring the bell and are gone before I even reach the stairwell.Yes, the interaction does change, as there is no longer a stairwell between you and the service provider.
Also, many delivery personnel usually cover a specific area themselves... there might be stand-in staff during holidays, but personal contact is possible if you want it.
“Ring and run” is a practice introduced because of Corona; this is called contactless handover.
At least I know our DHL delivery lady. After she once hit our car, we got to know each other a bit better^^. But it didn’t matter; the insurance took care of it. She has been responsible for us for many years, first at our rented apartment and now at the house. Of course, delivery personnel do change sometimes, and with other couriers, there are always different people, but the DHL lady and the postal carrier are always the same, so you occasionally have a chat. Both were also involved when we lived in the rental apartment, as mentioned.
A few hundred meters (yards) down the road, there’s a beverage store that will probably profit from us twice next year. Building site and school enrollment...^^

sichtbeton828 Sep 2020 12:45One should not overlook the positive side effects. For example, the refrigerator became a central meeting point. We also provided a table and chairs. The various trades often ended up eating together in a mixed group. This helped coordinate not only personal matters but also construction procedures. At least I had the feeling that this led to better teamwork. In office environments nowadays, communication zones are being created in hallways for the same reason.
As my father always used to say, the most important information at work is often shared over lunch…
I also occasionally gave a small tip to the waste collectors. This meant that any trash piled next to the containers was taken away without complaint. From my walks around the neighborhood, I know this didn’t happen on other streets.
Of course, if the tradespeople were just careless, I would stop doing it, but except for the tiler, we didn’t have any real troublemakers.
Sometimes, it’s just a kind gesture, and once in a while, you get something back.

fach1werk8 Sep 2020 21:39Tradespeople working here nowadays receive 10.- for a single day if we are satisfied with their work. For several days, it’s 20.-, and I never give it to the foreman.
Drinks are provided, though not everyone needs them, and when I’m having a good day and the guys have to work hard—especially if they are unfamiliar with the area—I sometimes cook a good meal for them and arrange a dining spot where they can eat undisturbed, like a garden shed or similar.
Of course, money isn’t mandatory, but recognition and respect for others’ work (where the quality can be appreciated) should definitely be noticeable.
Our structural workers had to push through in bad weather. Because it was wet and cold, I rented a break room nearby for their pauses so they could warm up. Their supervisor forbade them from using this room, claiming it would make them take longer. I later returned the room unused.
Best regards
Gabriele
