ᐅ Excessive Costs for the Kitchen?!

We are currently looking for a kitchen for our new build, which is scheduled to start in 2021. Nothing extravagant. Our first two visits to kitchen showrooms resulted in prices of at least 15,000 euros (around $16,000 USD), plus the side-by-side refrigerator that we plan to buy ourselves.

We are a bit surprised that for just a few pieces of furniture and three appliances (dishwasher, cooktop with fan, oven) we have to pay at least 15,000 euros. The consultants actually expected around 20,000 euros. The countertop is not even ceramic but rather granite.

Are there other options to purchase an affordable kitchen?

Please don’t get me wrong. We could afford such a kitchen. We just don’t see why we should spend 20,000 euros on a few furniture pieces and appliances.

If you have nothing useful to add, maybe just don’t post anything. I am looking for an assessment that should certainly be possible based on the information provided.
Your information is also not helpful.

We visited a kitchen showroom today to have a kitchen designed. It’s about 7.5m (24.6 ft) of kitchen space plus an island and appliances (Siemens oven, induction cooktop, refrigerator, microwave, and extractor hood). It’s a Nobilia kitchen with a lacquer finish. The tall cabinets reach up to the ceiling. We were offered a price of around 17,000 EUR, which I find reasonable, but I can’t really judge since we haven’t checked anywhere else. Does the price seem fair to you, or should we compare more?

Good luck

Depending on the exact appliances, the price could be reasonable. However, in my opinion, it’s also difficult to make direct comparisons since prices have increased across the board recently.

For any further comparisons, it’s important that the exact same appliances are included in the designs.

I’ve shared my experience about this before—it’s very, very hard to compare precisely because not every kitchen showroom has contracts with all manufacturers and their appliance lines.

One large kitchen showroom chain had contracts with Siemens but couldn’t offer the Studioline appliances that another showroom had planned for us. Another showroom couldn’t provide a Quooker, and so on—the process dragged on.

In the end, we signed with the one who was transparent and open from the start and also provided a visual render of the kitchen so we could review it thoroughly. For us, the price of 21,000 EUR for a white lacquer kitchen with Siemens appliances worked out fine. 😉

It seems suspiciously cheap to me. Most likely, there aren’t many drawers but rather swing doors, or maybe excessively tall drawers that are not very practical. I paid about 5500 for a total of 6.60 m (21.7 ft)—including 5 tall cabinets, two 80 cm (31.5 inch) wide base cabinets, two 40 cm (15.7 inch) and two 60 cm (23.6 inch) wide cabinets—and a minor island rear panel with a swing door, all from IKEA, excluding appliances and installation. But I do have an impressive 32 drawers in various heights, depending on the contents.

I suspect that 32 drawers from a reputable manufacturer would already cost around 15,000. My kitchen would have cost about 22,000 with a mid-range kitchen manufacturer, mainly because of the drawers. I would personally find it a pity to forgo drawers and would not do so.

I’ve also considered Ikea. Are you satisfied with the Ikea kitchen? Our kitchen based on Ikea cabinets with Ringhult fronts would cost about 8,000 without appliances.

Yes, I would do it the same way again. My kitchen is only 2 years old now, and I can hardly find any faults. I have the black Kungsbacka fronts. I don’t see what a branded manufacturer’s kitchen could do better if you stick reasonably close to the standard dimensions during planning. The great thing about Ikea is that the cabinets themselves are so affordable that you can easily modify them to fit better. I installed my dishwasher at a raised height, and it worked perfectly.

Why don’t you share your kitchen design? I can’t keep the whole thread in mind right now.

However, I have to add that after watching a report last year about Ikea’s business practices (on ZDF, I believe), I made a conscience donation to the local environmental protection organization. Ikea is an unpleasant company that neither pays taxes in many places nor shows much regard for resources or their renewal. They just hide this better than other companies. If I recommend Ikea, I also recommend making a donation to environmental protection or somewhere else worthy. The planet deserves that.

Nowadays, I would buy without appliances and get those separately. Otherwise, you end up with a kitchen where you have to wait months for the appliances. Check if you can get the appliances you want; if not, you’ll need alternatives. For example, we wanted a Bosch induction cooktop with downdraft ventilation. However, the delivery time was about 5 months or more. That’s why we went with an Elica Tesla Switch, which was delivered within a few days.
